Adding maize meal

I’m currently feeding a bunch of year bulls on a finishing nut which I’ll attach a photo of. I was just thinking today would it be possible to add 2-3kg a head of straight maize meal to the nut as they are currently on 9kg a day building to adlib. My thinking is that the maize would lower the protein slightly as it’s a bit high at 14% and give extra energy for a better finish without the risk of acidosis.

Is this just making extra hassle for myself or would it be a good idea? Or bad idea altogether

If you dont trust the nutritionist that put the mix together for the nut either switch to different miller or put together from straights yourself.

My experiance is there Are millers that add cheep fillers to keep price down but most will get it right or they will not get repeat business

I feed 9kg nut and I top up with 3kg maize meal , all fr 24month bulls . When they start getting the maize they’ll lie off content on the slats . It always gets the fat cover up to 3 or 4 which helps get your bulls killed when they are oversupplied

That was the idea I had in mind thanks

Is that 9 kg plus 3 kg per head per day?

I have often done it to both bulls and bullock's on high ration costs but prefer to use barley rather than maize for the last 4-6 weeks especially if a lot of maize in but/ration already. However Barley is expensive this year. However if buying inns!all bags there may not be any difference in price

That’s right, I just park a car trailer of maize meal at the end of the shed , the bulls love it and some won’t start eating until the maize is given . I don’t bother with it until a month in to feeding

I assume it’s ground maize or is it flaked maize ?

Maize is the highest ingredient in the nut according to the label.
If you go over 30% you really need to using flaked maize. Otherwise it's just going out the back door undigested.

Never heard that before. Feeding a 50% maize ration here (ground maize) and wouldn’t think it’s a problem.

Maize also slows down the running and can limit intake so even though barley is lower in feed value it can often do a better job. However if barley is not cheaper than maize then going 50/50 maize barley might be a better option
