Sometimes you learn the hard way

    Blocked drains and caustic soda.
    Learn from my mistake.
So I was clearing a blocked drain, I had a 4 meter flexible rod, didn't seem to reach the block.
In my wisdom I went for chemical warfare, that'll teach you to mess with me, you gnarly blockage.
Read the instructions, ignored the instruction and poured the contents down the drain.
It says leave for 20-30 minutes, so maybe if I leave it overnight it'll have longer to work.
Who would have thought caustic soda can solidify into a concrete like substance?
So.. the next 2 nights after work spent chipping away at a 15cm deep plug of solid caustic soda under the sink. Gloves eventually wore out before the solid block plugging up the drain. Ended up with the pink marigold's with fluffy cuffs.
And it does burn, get it on your skin and you will know all about it.
Get it on your face and you deffo know all about.
I cannot stress enough about gloves and safety glasses.
I have a few speckles on my face from splash back that did smart a bit, but the safety glasses did their job admirably.

Don’t think it solidified. More likely it crystallised after cooling down overnight. You might have had success if you poured very hot water into the plug but with no means to mix it that probably would have been a slow process.

Caustic soda is strong enough stuff. Once had a little pellet of it drop on to my shoe and get caught between the laces. Only noticed it after it had eaten through the leather tongue and my sock and started burning a hole in my foot.
