Battery Fencer

I'm just after checking a field where the fence is powered by a battery fencer where I'm strip grazing some dry cattle. The cattle had broken through the polywire so I brought a new battery down and changed to the new battery and checked the power output. Reading 7.7 so fine there and it dropped to 1.7 on connecting to the fence.

Off and checked the fence, no short at all there, all clean wire after reseeding the field last year. Earth lead onto a galvanised bar and stuck into the ground in a pool of water so doubt it's the earth. So back to the fencer again and checked the power output. Reading 7.7 again and dropped down to 3.5 while I watched and stayed there until I put it onto the fence and down to 2.4.

I replaced the power and earth leads last year so I'm hoping it's just them. The cattle are staying put atm anyway but anybody any idea if it's the leads or the fencer unit itself that's looking dodgy?

Fence is earthing somewhere I'd say. If you check all the posts, you should be able to hear it sparking. If not then check in the dark. You might see it sparking.

Have you any metal posts? Could be damage to insulation causing fence to earth through a post.

No earthing, Patsy. Nothing anywhere near the fence. I even bypassed the two underground insulated wires just in case it was there the problem was.

No metal posts, all cresoted stakes and all proper insulators.

Just checked now and they're gone across it again.

Get a loan of another battery fenced unit and try it , by the looks of it I say your own unit might be on the way out, some of those units have a habit of burning out .

Where are you testing the polywire?

At the fencer or at the farthest point from the fencer?
    Being polywire breaks, etc.

Other than that it's the fencer and you have the knowledge on that. Contacts, cables, etc.

And maybe shoot the first offender as a lesson to the rest of the herd...
