marking holes

    Hi,

    So two scenarios:
    1) I am trying to mark the drill holes for a bracket, but the the bracket is kinda think and I don't have a pencil thin enough to fit into the hole all the way to the wall to mark the correct spot.

    2) I have an existing drill hole in a wall and want to line up a pilot hold on a piece of timber to screw onto the wall.

In both cases I don't have any effect solution (other than markers and spray paint) to make an accurate mark.

Does there exist some handy gadget tool that magically solves my issues? I am aware a skilled person might not find themselves in such situations but has happened to me a fair bit recently.

Search for MarXman. Was on Dragon's Den. Sprays chalk through the hole.

1, make a stencil of your bracket.

    2, no idea!

    several options

marx man are great but expensive

use a drill bit to mark

photocopy the bracket and use that to mark it

put masking tape on the back and poke the holes in it . then peal it off and stick it to the wall

    1) I’ve used the insert of a ballpoint pen when stuck and it’s worked fine

    2) Not sure if I understand correctly what you’re trying to do.

Not sure if this will work for you, but I've often used a long masonry nail- thin enough and long enough to fit most holes, a small tap with a hammer leaves a good mark for drilling etc.

    1) could you not just pare a pencil with a Stanley knife so that enough nib was exposed to reach? Or as said earlier, pop a nail or screw through and give it a tap.

    2) need more info about what you're trying to do

    1. Use a small gauge drill bit to mark the wall through the bracket. Use manually or in a drill depending on the type of wall.

    2. Line up the timber at the side of the hole and make a pencil mark on the edge of the timber. You can transfer the mark across the face using a square and measuring tape.
