Deduction from wages for years

A friend had a small sum of money deducted from his wages each week for ten years. He was given to understand that this was a type of fund which would be returned to him on retirement. There was nothing in writing.Having retired he has been told that it was for uniform costs. He only ever received a few items of uniform, carefully maintained. The sum paid by him amounts to a few thousand euros. Colleagues of his elected not to pay this deduction and received the uniform anyway. He would be very grateful for any advice on the matter. He has paid over a lot of money and received virtually nothing for it.

Did he agree to this when starting? Is it in writing that he agreed?

It probably is and he is just looking for some money.

The payment of wages is governed by legislation and there are rule about what deductions can be made legally. Is he in union by any chance?

No. He specifically mentioned that when a few of us were talking about it and trying to make sense of the whole thing.

I think with there being nothing in writing, he's in a tricky spot.

Is there someone else in the company he can talk to who has also been paying this money? Perhaps if there is a group of people complaining about having paid this money, the company might feel pressure of make things right.

Ask in writing - the company will have to justify it.

Thanks for all the advice here. The problem was successfully resolved by consulting the WRC. The contributions were refunded.

Some shower of wànkers... 520 weeks...approximately. Say that was even a tenner a week, that’s circa 5200 he’s been handing back to his employer. Madness. If a job wants you to wear a uniform they better be prepared to provide it...
