Bull Fertility

Just bought a pedigree bull to go with cows. After collecting him noticed on his pedigree cert that he’s a twin to a female.
I know the females usually end up as free martins but is the males fertility affected in any way.
Has anyone any experience of same?

His fertility should be ok, it's the male hormones that affect the female calf. His daughters might be more likely to carry twins though.

Our resident vet here on boards said only yesterday, that a twin bull to a female may have reduced fertility.

Wasn’t made aware of it until I looked at pedigree cert when home.
I suppose a fertility test should reveal if he’s suitable.

You're testing my memory here..... my comment was based on something I was told years ago. I think the reduction in fertility is slight, if present at all. Given that there may now be doubt in your mind, and that a fertility test is never going to be a bad idea, fire ahead and put the issue to bed.

Just as a caution, remember the ultimate test of a bull is his ability to put cows in-calf. A fertility test only takes you a stage further on the good road, ultimately it still comes down to doing the business.
