We hear a lot about congestion in our major cities, not a lot can be done about it due to low density planning, the amount of protected structures and the absolute unwillingness to build decently sized building.

Considering Ireland has a fantastic motorway network should we look to build a brand new city from scratch near one of them allowing high density and transport to be planned out before construction starts leading to a city with a fantastic Standard of living and reduced commuting times for almost all living within it.

May also help attract more multinationals as the problem with finding office space in the center of said city wouldn’t be as much of a problem if the density was right from day one, thoughts?

    Athlone is the future!

Seriously though the Chinese were supposed to be interested in funding a development in the Midlands.

You obviously have never visited the north west of the country then.

Ireland has two purpose built towns and neither turned out as intended

    Shannon and Adamstown

There's no point in building a new city cos the next recession is just around the corner.

We should build it under the sea.

Richard Branson mused about that a few years ago. Obviously decided against it.

Think he’s looking at the moon now.

Slightly West Newish Dublin we will need to bulldoze Kildare and Offaly and flood the area into a blackish pool otherwise Dublin won't work as the name. ;)

In other countries, they build whole new towns from the ground up, all the necessary power plants, road and transport infrastructure, etc. as well as planned town centres.

I've spotted the problem right there.

Too many corrupt powers would object, it's too much of a good idea.

It's historically a bad idea a lot more often than it's a good idea. It's premised on a mistaken understanding of how cities grow and what draws people to them. New cities usually become a sink into which money is poured indefinitely and to little benefit.

Also, definitely a bad idea to invite the Chinese into any strategic infrastructural development ventures. They are doing this across the global South and it's giving them a massive stranglehold on the power structures of many nations.

And then you see Dublin where they allow building of houses along the Dart/Commuter line limiting another line to aleviate congestion and you have planners taking bungs say a house is in x where it's actually in Kipville Y.

Geographical centre of the Island suggests where 8° Meridian West, meets the 53°30' North Latitude (a field in Roscommon),
however to access motorways, ports and the main population density that would have to be a nudge East e.g. Mullingar.

Would only need area size of 115km2 (10.5 x 11km), to build a Vancouver size city, catering for 600,000.

And who do you think will be running the new city?

I suggest an area near Newcastle West my reasons being it's close to the port of Foynes and it's on the west coast which means it's ideally situated for wind turbines both onshore and offshore while minimising transmission losses also the West tends to get quite a lot of rain so it would be perfect if you wanted your buildings in the new city to have rainwater harvesting systems.

    Easier done than you think.

The Shannon basin used to look like this. *
    Just upgrade the Parteen weir.
