What van to buy?

Looking for a van for my dad. He's retired now and just needs it for odd jobs and pottering about. He also needs to be able to fit a few bikes in it, this is important to him and he's not interested in having bike racks etc. He's just sold his Hiace and is looking for something a bit smaller. We test drove a transit connect this morning but the SWB one isn't long enough. The LWB ones seems to hard to find? Any other suggestions?!

    Citroen Dispatch/Peugeot Expert/Fiat Scudo ?

Toyota Proace in on it too! In his badge of choice as well.

Caddy Maxi worth a look too.

Don't know much about vans and hence the thread but that proace looks lovely!
Should have mentioned below budget would be 6-8k

€6-8k rules out the Proace (it’s another rebadged version of the Dispatch/Expert)

    This is the Caddy Maxi

    It’s basically a longer Caddy.

There's also a Renault Kangoo Maxi or XL or some other name that's longer than standard. Cheaper than a Caddy and the newer models (13 on) were strongly recommended to me.

Nissan NV200 might be his cup of tea too he’s used to the Hiace and wants something more traditional in shape.

A transit connect? I love vans, grew up with my dad having them.
Those transits have a nice interior.
    Something like this https://www.donedeal.ie/commercials-for-sale/ford-transit-connect-lwb/21442710?campaign=3

Probably the correct choice.Bought a kangoo maxi last year and hate it.Ok on the open road but find the clutch terrible and steering heavy in town situations.Maybe it's just me?Anyone else have an opinion?

    There's 2 engine types .. 1.6 and 2.0,
I think the 2.0 would probably be better ,
The 1.6 while in every Ford ,peugot ,citroen (and bmw ??) Doesn't put up with abuse ..and van owners tend to miss oil changes ect ..

The 1.6hdi 8v is newer and supposedly more reliable than the older 16v. Think the 8v was introduced around 2011.

I'd personally go 2.0 as well but a clean one at a good price can be hard found.

There are very few 2.0 for sale in 2011-2015 models, I suppose there is a reason for that

    Price ?
And maybe size ... Ive a feeling the lwb ones were all 2.0 ... (But open to correction )

Just saw this thread. In the middle.of looking at a van just for driving around and doing my odd DIY jobs driving to work 30km round trip.
    Looking at Partner/Berlingo around 09.

Any recommendations on a particular van, how hard they are to DoE vs NCT for a car say and most importantly where am I likely to get the best quote for a 1st time policy on a van??

    Tha ks

Have a look at the Motor Tax section on your local authority website.
There will be a list of documentation required to tax your van commercially.
If you can't provide what they require and sign a declaration in Garda Station that you will only use it for commercial purposes you will have to tax private at the old cc rate.

Hard to say what van. At that age if you can get a well serviced one with not too big mileage go for it.

DOE (now called CVRT) is similar to NCT but done in privately owned garages. Sometimes a bit more laid back.

Try a good independent broker for a quote.
