Im building a small section of fence. I already have the wood lying around so dont want to buy anything else.

Id like to have the tops of the posts to be rounded. See the picture for an example.
Are there any other methods available other than using a jigsaw?

Mark out the curve with a compass and use a belt sander. Or a coping saw. Jigsaw is the easiest option.

Hand router with a bearing cutter, if you had access to one.

jigsaw and sand one to the shape your happy with and router the rest using the first one as your jig.

Aren't you going to get massive tear out on one side with a router on the end grain?

Only did it once on a few pieces and they were ok, I did trim away most of the excess with a jigsaw tho.

My routering is usually all plastics tho, so no expert on timber.

No. You come in from each side and meet in the middle.

A planer should do the trick

I did it myself a few years ago but I just used a jigsaw.

I used a paint tin to mark the curve.

Cheap coping saw. It's a thin blade on a tall frame.

+1 with the right blade: scrolling blade..
Cut 20 perfect circles yesterday with one, just needed a rub of sand paper

    :)
Turn off the pendulum motion and take your time, have the piece well cramped and guide saw with two hands
