I was wondering if anyone can help, I was using the family laptop an hour ago, everything is fine. Turn it off, go to start it up again and now it isn't accepting the login password. I have checked that it is typed in correctly, Number Lock key, caps lock

    No joy.

It is Windows 7 if that helps.

    Thanks in advance.

    Might there be keyboard damage?

    Thanks for the advice.

Tried the on-screen keyboard and it doesn't work either, also tried turning the internet off to circumnavigate any updates that might get in the way, all no joy.

I am for some reason unable to start it in safe mode, from what I remember to get that pressing f8 while it is turning on is how to access safe mode.

Try typing the password in the user name box to verify it as if the keyboard layout got changed for example @ could change to "

    And verify the username

Can you see the password after it's entered rather than just the masked password (Usually dots or *).

As goldenhoarde says, it could have changed to US layout. @ and " switched are usually an obvious sign

I have checked to ensure the keyboard layout is set to Qwerty. The language is set to UK English, and the password is showing as being correct when I view password.

Then perhaps someone changed the password

No, it was used less than an hour before the issue occurred. I haven't left the room and no one has been in the room.

No space before password or username? What message are you getting?

I don't know if it'll help, but on a tablet with Windows 10 sometimes the all caps key gets "reversed" but it's not visible until you try to type - so, it looks like you've the caps lock on (the light is on), but it actually types in lower key, and vice versa. Could that have happened with your laptop, too?

For some reason I can't access safe mode, it is Windows 8.1 not 10 as I originally thought.

I have up dated the password on Microsoft via a mobile and neither of the passwords are being accepted.

Have tried the following methods to start in safe mode: F8, function +F8, shift key, F11, and F12 while rebooting. It just opens in to Guest account.

Without access to the administratior account there is nothing I can do to change the settings.

It is a Lenovo G50 Laptop.

I am stressed, if anyone can give some reasonable help that would be greatly appreciated.

Go into network settings and click on forget network. Then try reconnecting to it with your password

    Internet isn't the issue...

1Restart your PC. When you get to the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down while you select Power > Restart.
After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
