Advice on buying hybrid (self charging) vehicle

    Hi all,

I'm planning to buy slightly used Hybrid Vehicle (5 or less years old) if you can please suggest.
My maximum annual mileage are less than 7k so I would use it only for family (dropping kids to school 10km return), groceries, family out etc.
Current Petrol car can only go for approximately 9km per litre which is more than 10 years old (get 1 year NCT only).

So I want to go for a hybrid car if you can please suggest and share your experience of which make, model Hybrid family car I should go. I don't mind if its 5 or 7 seat but would prefer if its 7 seat to accommodate any visiting guest.

My main purpose of upgrading car is to get good mileage / economy car with minimum possible road tax.

    Any Pros Cons are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

7 seater is limited to Prius+ which to be honest is a great car. My mate had one and they are very very frugal.

    Pro: Cheaper on fuel
Cons: Not as cheap as BEV

    Thanks for the advice.
There are two types of Prius Plus in the market i.e. Japanese import which are slightly cheaper than European Model. Would there be any issue if buy Jap import Hybrid?

Check with you insurance.....some insurance companies have issues with them, hence why they are cheaper

You'd be mad not to get a purely electric car for that sort of mileage.

With the money you'd save, you could rent a 7 seater for your visiting guest! :)

Sounds like the person will have 1 car.....also no idea if they have a home charger available....

BEV of course will be cheaper but might not be the right fit. Prius+ is a great car as well

Not many 7 seater BEV knocking around

With that low miles would you not buy something interesting instead of a plug in hybrid.

I like your thinking but I ruled that out based on 7 seat requirement.....anything interesting really gets killed with 7 seats

OP has no mention of budget, tesla model X comes in 7 seater, as does some model S

Japanese are dearer to insure. Op a modern petrol engine has close to the same mpg as a hybrid the battery range in them is very very low

The ol’lad has a new Lexus jeep and it’s only averaging 7.1km/100 the misses Touran is getting 8.1 and it’s a few years older

OP you mentioned 5 or 7 seats.
If 5 how about a Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid?

Your local driving would be in electric mode.

So they asked for something that doesn't exist except in marketing language by Toyota.

If the OP can have a home charger, it would be nuts to buy a hybrid based on that mileage. Lowest possible tax is full BEV.

My budget is between 10 to 20k. Please suggest considering:
Low Road Tax and more economical on fuel and maintenance.

Can you install a charge point at home?

I'm not sure as the parking space is little bit ahead of small footpath.
So, if I come out of my front door, after few yards, there is foot path and then car parks. So even if I get extension power cable from inside, it may obstruct pedestrian.

That's the reason, I would prefer self charging hybrid car.

The main question, will it be your only car?

Do you go on long trips on regular occurances?

With a Japanese import you won't be eligible for the Hybrid Health Check which can extend the battery warranty by one year up to 10 years.

The Japanese model is called the Prius α (Alpha), so very easy to tell from Irish/UK examples.

    5.65 l/100km average based on 310 users: https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/49-Toyota/1288-Prius_Plus.html?fueltype=2&powerunit=2

"Range" is pointless with a petrol hybrid, that's exactly why they have small batteries.
The ol’lad has a new Lexus jeep and it’s only averaging 7.1km/100 the misses Touran is getting 8.1 and it’s a few years older
So a much bigger, more powerful Lexus has lower fuel consumption than a Touran? You know it's litres per 100km, right?

The Lexus jeep will be a lot heavier to the touran so not really a comparison.

    Hi,

Yes, it will be the only car I will have.
No, I don't go to long trips regularly but very limited or occasionally.

    Hi OP,

Before pulling the trigger on a hybrid, I would suggest asking about getting a charge point installed. There is a €600 grant, which would go a long way toward getting one, but you need to confirm you can get one and confirm the cost. One of the posters here also has a pathway outside his front door and had a charger installed.

Your mileage and use pattern is perfect for even the lowest range EVs. You could pick up a Nissan Leaf and have a charger installed at the low end of your budget. Tax is €120. Maintenance is a fraction of the cost. Cost of fuel...well it costs about €2 to fill up a Leaf 24 which comfortably gives 100km of range. Yes, I said €2.

You are limited to 5 seats, unless you are willing to buy (or have sourced from the UK) a Nissan ENV200. It's a 7 seater van version of the Nissan Leaf.

If you have any questions about EVs....or even a hybrid, this community is a good one, save for a few trolls.

edited to add: You won't pay any VRT on an EV imported from the UK as long as you stay under 35k omsp.
