No one else can explain or simplify this stuff like he can.

The photo, taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, shows an incredible X-shaped structure in deep space that appears to resemble a crucifix.

Or someone dabbing. Or just two lines intersecting, what a rare occurrence.

    Oh the Daily Star :D

Actually, I think that's a dodgy photo of me taking part in the javelin at our 1986 school sports day. It was so foggy, I was sure that was going to be an accident. I didn't win, but I got gold in the discus...

It's a giant lonely alien standing with his hands out for a big hug.

Another explanation is it's the ring of stars and dust around the M51 galaxy's central black hole. Most black holes have one ring, but it's been predicted that some could have more. All that's happening here is that one ring is tilted at right angles to the other, so when you look at it head on it looks like a cross.

Here's a similar thing happening with the stars of the galaxy NGC 660. The inner ring is tilted with respect to the outer one and you can see them making a cross:

    NGC-660-a-starburst-polar-ring-galaxy-lies-over-20-million-light-years-away-in-Pisces.-This-rare-galaxy-type-has-stars-gas-and-dust-orbiting-in-rings-nearly-perpendicular-to-the-plane-of-the-galactic-disk.jpg

Which of these explanations you prefer to believe will depend on how hardhearted you are. :(

Yeah but what are the chances that we just so happen to be looking at it head on? Be fairly coincidental if thats the case.

That we'd be looking at at least one galaxy head on enough to see something like this? Nearly 100%

    Close your account,open another.

Or if you pay a sub I think name changing is an option.

    Nice cuddly alien, of course.

Succinct as always, thank you. You're a gifted teacher, Fourier. :)

For a black hole with two rings there's about ~30% chance it'd be facing you the right way to look roughly like a cross.

I always had a sneaking suspicion that if we could get to the center (centre? Probably could've looked it up in the time if took to type this.... ah well, you're nearly there now) of the universe, we'd find instructions on how to get to the next level.

"Bring the bronze key to 0101010111010110100011001001011001010100101001010010101010011001010101010010010101001010010101001001010101001001010100101001010100100101010010100101010010100101001010101001010001001010111010100101010011001..."
