Would things be different if Ireland was a perfect rectangle?

I imagine that in the fields of geology etc., a perfectly rectangular island would cause some head-scratching. Same if it were the shape of large penis or a set of goalposts.

It looks like a teddy bear but not quite defined enough to be an issue, just like Italy's boot I suppose.

I've wondered this before. What if some land mass was undeniably representative of something by pure chance.

Hadn't seen that before. Nice photos of it on Google.

I guess if the country was a perfect rectangle it'd be easier to draw than the dole.

Op has been taking the good stuff all weekend.

Girlfriend is on holiday with her friends for five days. The fact that I, and my cats, are still alive is a miracle.

Just wanted to bring back some of the randomness to AH to amuse myself.

Same if it were the shape of large penis

    Sweden/Finland already have that covered.

Why does it have to be a rectangle?

Could it not be a trapezoid or a dodecahedron?

Here you go, OP -- a perfectly rectangular island.

Scandinavia certainly does on the euro coin.

The coast line would be a lot shorter. The Wild Atlantic Way is 2600km but Mizen Head to Malin Head is 450km as the crow flies.

Apropos shapes of countries, France is often referred to as "the Hexagon".

Well the coastline paradox suggests that any coast is basically infinite in length since you can always make the unit of measurement smaller.

A perfectly rectangular island wouldn't have this issue.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of the coastline paradox. I don't know how the length was determined and if it's the distance to drive around the coast or a measurement of the coast's length itself.

Driving it means taking short cuts. You have to swim it.
This guy is going to measure the coast this summer. He probably tows a very long measuring tape behind him.

They measure it via satellite these days. But fair play to his effort.

Btw the unit of measurement is an inch.

Only if you are an inchworm.
    Its all metric these days.

    Not good swimmers.

OP: A rectangle is of course a label. Science unable to explain it would explain it away.
