    Hi folks,

I have been referred to the Mater for a nerve conduction test. I have never heard of this procedure and although there is much information out in the world of the internet some is conflicting as regards how the procedure is carried out. I am just wondering if anyone who may have had the procedure carried out either on them or they know of a family member or friend who has had it done...would be willing to share that experience... thanks ;)

I had it done some years back, can't imagine the procedure has changed much.. For me the areas tested were my hand, arm and neck, it was basically painless, they attach small electrodes things to the area and run low level charge through, i had results right then and there with a hardcopy sent on to my gp and consultant

I've had nerve conduction study and emg test carried out twice in Beaumont.
It's grand. Bit like acupuncture. Can be slightly uncomfortable when they are trying to find a "unit" but what i liked was the accuracy of it. Consultant told me i would have 70% use back within 18months to 2years, going by results. He was right. Improving every day.

I had it done recently for suspected (and now confirmed) carpal tunnel syndrome.

It took about half an hour, they put little wire loops on your fingers and then zap a current through - it's a mild pins and needles sensation, bit weird but definitely not sore.

As the poster above said, he confirmed there and then that there was nerve impairment, and referred me onwards accordingly.

I had one done - was a piece of cake. They basically stick an electrode thing on various parts of your arm / leg multiple times and your fingers can move etc. but it doesn't hurt at all. That was my experience anyway - I was chatting away to the guy doing it the whole time. Not sure if it is different for different parts of the body but I found it a non-event - would have one every day without a bother!

Folks, thanks so much for the replies, very kind. It’s certainly put my mind to rest. Carpel Tunnel is a favored school of thought too Heidi at the moment after a rather grim original misdiagnosis but things looking up now and I’m certainly not stressing that test... thanks all !

Nothing to stress about, the needles on the electrodes are tiny, the little shocks are a bit like one of those ab machines that were all the rage in the 90s.

Just back from test and it’s grand. A doctor and nurse / technician completed the test in a very comfortable and relaxed setting. It’s not in any way invasive and there was no pain just very very minor I guess discomfort in small parts when the voltage was highest. Certainly weird a bit but not in a bad way... lasted about an hour. Detailed results to be sent to my consultant but doctor who completed the test stated all appeared good and normal and not to worry.

    Thanks all for your input.
