Download speed drop on iPhone

    Hi,

I’ve noticed that the download speed has halved on my iPhone when checking via the Speedtest app at home. The upload is what I expect it to be.

Vodafone is my broadband provider and their router is bridged to my Orbi router. The Speedtest that the Orbi does confirms the profile hasn’t changed.

The only change in my set up is that we got Sky Q installed which is connected to the Orbi but nothing was downloaded when I ran the test on my phone. I know the Sky Q box creates its on network for the additional mini boxes to run off so I’m wondering is there something else going on in the background.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this recently? My phone is the iPhone XS Max.

First check would be to see what WiFi channels are in use by both Sky Q and the Orbi in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz to see if there is any clash there.

Is the Q main box wired to your Orbi?

Itll either be narrow channel support or overlaps between the sky mesh and your own network.

I have turned off the 2.4GHz on both mini and main Q box. Will check later.

Yes, the main Q box is connected by ethernet to the main Orbi router. One of the minis is connected by ethernet to the satellite Orbi and the other mini is using wifi to the main router I presume as it is closest. I feel there is an IP class sometimes as the Q creates its own network to communicate with the minis. I wonder is it a Qos issue but that is off in my Orbi router?

By default Sky Q uses an 80MHz wide channel width starting at channel 36 for it's mesh. If your Orbi is also using part or all of this frequency it could lead to issues.

Cheers Navi, that could be it. I’ll check when I’m home.

I just logged into the Orbi remotely and it is using channel 36 as well so I taking it is a conflict. On the Q Engineer menu it says not to change the band so I’ll just change the Orbi 5GHz channel. Any recommended channel to use for 5 Ghz?

    52 up as Q is using 36 - 48.

Seems like it isn’t anything to do with Sky Q at all. I disabled the Sky Q mesh network on all boxes and same issue. There was a recent Orbi firmware update 2.3.1.44 which I’m blaming.

What band width is Orbi using?

I don’t think it’s a wifi issue either as I plugged my laptop via ethernet to the main Orbi router and the speeds were reduced too so it’s something in the firmware.

I think Vodafone maybe having issues. Someone else in a different county as me is having similar issues on Vodafone too and is getting a similar download speed interestingly enough. Anyone here have insight into the Vodafone network at the moment?

Either that or the Speedtest iOS app is having issues.

So I finally resolved it as when I removed the bridge altogether and reverted to using the Vodafone modem (659) even though it was syncing correctly and line stats were what they were, the download speed even via ethernet was reduced. I did a factory reset of the Vodafone router and that resolved the issue. Even wifi calling is back working. Not sure what happened to cause the issue in the first place. Bridge enabled also on the 659.
