Hiatus hernia - Nissen Fundoplication surgery recovery complications

Hi, am 36 years old and had the Nissan Fundoplication procedure. It's been 8 days since I had the operation and am driving and eat soft foods (limited - like soups / rice pudding mostly) I tried soft bread like sponge cake and it was ok with ice cream, but began to feel pain after - I got too excited my mend was going so well.

I opted for the procedure because pain in my stomach, didn't have much reflux if not any but knew something wasn't right. Did the 24 pH test which showed I had 25 rating of acid or whatever it meant (which is extremely high) so get the surgery and wasn't that scary.

But today I have pain when I breath left side and back (I think it's my kidney but not sure) am worried it may be an infection, but am only 8 days recovering - so I don't know if it's part and parcel

Has anyone had this symptom of pain during early recovery of this surgery?

    Hey!

I hope your recovery is going well and your pain has improved by now.

How are you getting on at this stage?

What kind of foods are you eating (and avoiding)?

Are you doing any exercise etc?

    Be interested to know.

    I had the OP yesterday.

    Hi
Hope you don't mind me asking , I stumbled across your post and am curious about how you are doing now.

I am awaiting my op and starting to question if I should go ahead with it. Have been on medication now for 12 years and when my symptoms get bad the doctor tells me to pop another pill. The surgeons tell me I am a good candidate ( have had scope and ph test done) but I worry about the fact that my swallow may be hindered after surgery. ( my GP like to tell me its all bad) Surgeons say its a possibility.
How are you now and have you had any improvement since your op.

Yes also very interested to find out how it has been OP?

I was told once that it is a one-time shot kind of surgery and should wait until I'm in my 60s to have it done for a better effect. Wondering what they meant. Does it become less effective when older i wonder?

I had the operation done in November 2018. It was tough the first 2 weeks and it was painful to some extent. After a month I started to realise food was getting stuck and the only was to get it down was to take a big sip of water and force it down. I went back to the doctors and they stuck a camera down again and did xrays and said it looks fine.

After a while I just went with it and gulped water down whenever it happened which wasn't too often. I havent had any symptoms of acid reflix up until 3 days ago.. The doctor did warn me that it could slip and have to be redone in some caes. The last 3 days have been hell and I have been having such bad acid reflux but currently with all the stuff going in the world Idont see myself being able to go see a doctor about it now. The operation did help soo much but I dunno if my acid reflux is temporary or if the wrap has slipped...

    Hi there,

Just looking for some advice re severe acid reflux.

I’m a 27 year old female. I’ve been having very bad acid reflux for just over a year and it’s really starting to take over my life as nothing seems to help it.
It started out that I had H Pylori and I was put on a weeks treatment last March for that and it got rid of my symptoms for about 6 months. However around September last year these symptoms came back and seemed to be worse so my doctor put me on two weeks H Pylori treatment as it may not have been eradicated the first time. This worked for a few months but I am now getting reflux worse than ever. It’s lasting 24hours a day everyday. I’m currently on 20mg of pariet twice a day as well as maxolon. I’m awaiting a scope but I feel hopeless as I don’t know when I will get one due to the current pandemic and it’s really starting to effect my mental health and also my relationship and I am constantly miserable lately. I’m in the middle of buying a house and I’m not even excited for it due to this problem. I’ve tried nephramel, zomel and now pariet, which seemed to work at the start but not anymore. I’m assuming it’s a hiatus hernia but I have to wait for the scope for confirmation. Does anyone have any idea how much the Nissen fundlopication procedure costs to go private in Ireland?

Sorry can't answer your question but I had identical issies and I've basically cured myself without having an operation.

I accidentally found that food with yeast was causing my acid even though doctor had blamed the hyatious hernia below my heart.

For the past two decades I avoid alcohol as it contains yeast and other foods with yeast such as soft breads.

I can live a comfortable life avoiding yeast in foods.

So sorry to hear you are suffering. I went through much the same situation myself. Started when I was 21 and seriously curtailed my life for a number of years. I understand that diet is a complicated issue and what works for one person may not suit another person but can I ask what is your diet like? Full disclosure I had the surgery in 2005 but it didn't help and it wasn't until I made serious dietary changes that I managed to leave this thing behind me.
