Hi I had a smart heating thermostat fitted recently. It stopped working last night and the company can't get anyone out till tomorrow.
The boiler is a firebird is there any way of overriding the thermostat and turning it on for today ?

Most smart thermostats have an over-ride/boost function, but if the device has failed, this might not work.

    Which device is it?

Seems the device has failed so boost doesn't do anything. It tells me the boiler is on but it isn't.

If you tell the type it may help but we're any of the old control or switches left?.

You could disconnect and put a new immersion style switch on or time clock till the old one can be replaced.

You can get these in most hardware or electrical supply store.

Make sure all power is off before doing anything like this.

If you knew what you were doing you could take the controller out of the loop so to speak.

It's going to be replaced tomorrow so won't be buying anything or removing it. Just wondered if there any way of overriding it at the boiler end just for tonight. But it doesn't seem so.

Would need to know which control it is to see what over-ride is possible......!!!

Example, Hive has an over-ride button built on to the receiver that can be used, so what your asking is like ringing the mechanic saying you've broken down on the motorway, how can you get the car going without telling him the model

Nothing can be done from the device end, hence the question if anything can be done at the boiler end. No need for trying to be a smart arse.

I am no smart arse, I am a professional person who gives up my time free of charge here to help people (and have done so here for 8 years!)
    Enjoy your cold evening.
Would need to know which control it is to see what over-ride is possible......!!!
    Made a statement.....
Example, Hive has an over-ride button built on to the receiver that can be used
    Gave you an example why....
so what your asking is like ringing the mechanic saying you've broken down on the motorway, how can you get the car going without telling him the model
Gave you an analogy to explain why I requested the info......

The question was can the thermostat be bypassed from the boiler. Simple question requiring a yes or no answer. No need to bring cars or mechanics into it.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 3,496 ✭✭✭DGOBS

    Yes it can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,991 ✭✭✭jimf

yes the stat can be bypassed

but anybody who post here regularly like tony dgobs etc wont tell you how

as you are technically interfering with a very important safety feature of your boiler

Well I don't want to do that so I'll light the fire.

MOD NOTE: No one was trying to be a smartarse, you were being helped (civilly) by someone very knowledgable. Now I ask you to remain civil in you posts on this thread or face sanctions.

You may close the thread now. Like so many on boards it turned into a drama. Thanks to JimF that's all I wanted to know.

    Drama?
You asked a question, with absolutely none of the detail required to HELP YOU

The questions were asked so as to give you the correct answer, there is multiple types of smart controls (including your secret ones) matched to 100s of types of oil boiler, and 1000's of types of gas boilers, wired with many different auxiliary controls, motorised valves, and differing wiring plans, each of which may have different work arounds in your situation.

Which any of us here are only too happy to help with, and give you a solution if there was one (such as putting motorised valves into manual positions), but it required more information that was offered.

Afraid the drama is all on your own doorstep. Enjoy your open fire, make sure you have a CO alarm.
