Laptop screen brightness keeps cycling

    HP Pavilion Laptop 14-bf0xx

When using at night (when no other light source), screen brightness keeps cycling - getting ridiculously bright, then less so - (and repeats this pattern on an ongoing basis).

How do I adjust this so that it remains consistent?

do you have some sort of eco setting turned on? that's all I can think of.

I would assume there is an auto lighting sensor which is supposed to set the ideal screen brightness, which either doesn't work anymore or doesn't work well at extremes of darkness. Generally the solution should be to turn off auto brightness and just adjust manually.

Thanks both...I assume you're right too - just can't seem to find the right switch for that functionality.

I wouldn't necessarily expect there to be a button/switch. It should be in settings somewhere.

But looking at the user manual for this model it doesn't mention having this funciton:

Is the laptop plugged in at the time? When did this start happening? And have you installed any software that claims to improve the battery life?

Sorry - I'm being lazy with my words. I mean't settings.

Just seems to have stated over-night. Didn't notice it on previous occasions - and I use laptop in the dark quite a bit. It was plugged in...hmm....I'll try it tonight without it being plugged in.

I have a similar issue with my HP too - it adapts the screen brightness according to what is being displayed.

There was a small piece of software that could stop this, but a recent Win 10 update has made it ineffective.

So far, I haven't found any solution.

That's a shame. I use laptop with no other light source quite regularly. It was only last night it became an issue. Not sure what I changed that brought it on...
