I just got my rolec wallpod installed and the sparky installed an isolator with it, is the isolator necessary or is it legislation that it has to be there, it would look a lot neater if the feed ran straight into the wallpod, input and opinions please.

It's not necessary and it's certainly not necessary to have it right beside the CP. I have not seen any done like that.

The RCBO in the consumer unit would have sufficed I'd say, but we'd need the input of a certified electrician who is up to speed with the latest regs to comment to be sure.

I have seen some installs like that but I've seen more without it so I'd suspect its not actually required.

It's not the prettiest and against a white dashed wall it makes it really stand out.

Don't get it, I'd only get it if it was on the inside of the house so the home owner could turn power to the charger off in case of freeloader plugging in for a cheeky charge

Some electricians like to put isolators beside every piece of equipment they install. I guess it's just a habit. Belt and braces approach maybe. My RECI sparks installed an isolator between my solar inverter and the RCBO in my consumer unit. I'm going to do the exact same with my battery inverter (sparks will connect it to the consumer unit - I'm not touching that)

Hey Unkel. Its not habit its from a misinterpretation / confusion over the regulations. The regs state that there must be an isolator beside a fixed appliance within 2 meters but to date there has been zero clarification if the ETCI / NASI will see the CP as an appliance or socket. There is a definition for an appliance in the regulations but a CP doesn't fit it so the general conseneous is no. The new regulations will not be out until July at this point, we will have to wait until then to see.
