Ha! Watched that yesterday. He won the other two in a referral programme? I'm in the wrong business.

Yeah, not a great advertisement for Tesla workmanship.

Yep. He's a funny and trustworthy guy. Used to be a programmer, but he got so many viewers / followers for his YT channel that he chucked the day job. I guess getting a free >100k car every couple of years helps put bread on the table too :D

After I saw his winter test of Ioniq, proving that it was a well specced, very good car with a very decent range even in atrocious winter weather in Norway, I almost immediately booked a 24h test drive. And I bought the car the day after the test drive, this week 2 years ago. I'd say he'd have a garage full of new Ioniqs if Huyndai had a referral program too :)

Free cars but not quite, as he "worked" for them they are considered earned and not won so he has to pay PAYE tax on them

I'd say it was CGT / CAT he had to pay, not income tax.

It was income tax, equivalent of BIK here.
Treated as "notional income". He said it in a couple of older videos #fanboy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,277 ✭✭✭✭KCross

He had a video on it recently. It was treated as income because he had to work to win the prize, so it was income tax not CGT he had to pay apparently.

And it was alot of money. Cant remember exactly but I think it was something like €30k for one of the earlier prizes he got (S or X).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,913 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

It was treated the exact same as if he was paid the OMSP amount in cash

I'm surprised "Wifey" got an E-Up.

Very interesting case. To be treated as income, it would need to be his business (self employed) to make money from his social media activities. Which now I suppose it is. Which means he can deduct costs too.

Not sure if he had given up his day job by the time his first Tesla was rewarded though?

Would it matter? You can have more than one source of income. They would still be entitled to say he "worked" for it, hence its income.

It wasnt like he bought a ticket and won a prize. He had to make it happen.... i.e. work for it.
He didnt realise himself he was going to be paying tax on it the first time so that was a bit of a shock I'd say. He thought it was a prize and all free, which I can understand too.

I think it's hilarious the way he refers to her as "Wifey". Must watch that video.

He uploaded a 600km E-Up road trip one last night.

it's funny, they're not a car that comes up in EV conversations a lot at all but I see plenty of them around my area. Leaf is the only EV I see more of.

I had never heard of them before now.

It would. Well over here anyway. I can't claim to know anything about the Norwegian tax system!

It's a bit like if you have a job but you trade a bit in shares on the side. Your profits are capital gains and CGT applies (even though it can be quite hard work :pac:). If you do it as a job / trade, your profits are your income and IT applies. But you can deduct costs then too. Here in Ireland it's up to yourself how you want to be treated as it is all self assessed.

Is there an electric E-Up sold in Ireland?

I didn't even know there was a non electric version tbh, so maybe that's why I'm seeing them everywhere :pac:

According to beepbeep only one eUp has been brought into Ireland, plenty of petrol models around.

The 600 km road trip, really shows the value of a functional multi charger per site network. I wouldn't dream of driving mine down to Cork with the current network!

Knowing he had unsuitable tyres on he still went on the track and got the expected result.

Looking at the damage (and repair cost) made me appreciate the benefit of the old bumpers which were designed to absorb such impacts.

The thing is, he will get so many more views, and many more followers from that video alone, that the payment will
    Probably buy him a new M3 :)

You seriously think any other car would have just absorbed that impact without any damage?

Either way, he knows what he is doing.
He has 3 Tesla’s currently. A free roadster on the way, or 2 actually.
Multiple referrals. He will actually benefit from this.

I never said without damage ...... but certainly with much less damage. That is what they were designed to do, and they did it, for the most part, effectively.

In which case he knew that he was most likely to lose control on the tyres fitted ...... he even made a big deal about them not being suitable for the conditions.

Given that, the implication is that he crashed deliberately to "benefit from this".

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,708 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

He instantly got free winter tyres plus fitting and free shipping of his summer tyres home.....

He didn't run into a wall of snow, it was a wall of snow covered frozen ice so it was the frozen ice that did the damage...shhhheeeeettttt

€2300 investment less the free tyres less the increased views (his most viewed video, or at least one of, is the time he crashed the model X offroading) and he's in profit for sure

It also seemed a little lucky to me that he happened to have drone footage of it! ;)

Not saying he done it on purpose, but i'm saying that its no skin off his back. He will actually profit from this.

The only damage is a cracked lower bumper, so bumper replacement. Any car that hit that ice wall would have suffered similar damage.

I don't know how the body is constructed, but from the video shown it seem that a large body panel has been damaged and not just a 'bumper' which might be expect to protect the body panel.

Maybe I am mistaken about that panel and it is only a very small separate part .......
