Email Scam

So I received this beauty today
    Hello,

As you may have noticed, I sent this email from your email account (if you didn't see, check the from email id). In other words, I have full access to your email account.

I infected you with a malware a few months back when you visited an adult site, and since then, I have been observing your actions. The malware gave me full access and control over your system, meaning, I can see everything on your screen, turn on your camera or microphone, and you won't even notice about it. I also have access to all your contacts.

Why your antivirus did not detect malware? It's simple. My malware updates its signature every 10 minutes, and there is nothing your antivirus can do about it.

I made a video showing both you (through your webcam) and the video you were watching (on the screen) while satisfying yourself. With one click, I can send this video to all your contacts (email, social network, and messengers you use).

You can prevent me from doing this. To stop me, transfer $976 to my bitcoin address. If you do not know how to do this, Google - "Buy Bitcoin".

My bitcoin address (BTC Wallet) is : <snip>

After receiving the payment, I will delete the video, and you will never hear from me again. You have 48 hours to pay. Since I already have access to your system, I now know that you have read this email, so your countdown has begun.

Filing a complaint will not do any good because this email cannot be tracked. I have not made any mistakes.

If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, I will immediately send the video to all of your contacts.

    Take care!

Seemed to come from my own account, of course viewing the full source I can see the real address.

I must say though, it is impressive hacking, activating a webcam that doesn't exist !! bloody hell that must be some savage code.

I know this is AH and we are having a bit of fun and please post some humorous replies, but if anyone is in doubt and receives messages like the above, ignore it, it would really really annoy me if these scheisters were getting free money this way.

Also, word of advice, if you do partake in a bit of a Tom Hank in front of a desktop/laptop/PC/Tablet/phone - block the camera with some tape, that way doesn't matter how good the hack is.

Best is desktop sin camera, or unplugged.

    Now, let's crack some jokes.

Been getting those for months. What I don't understand are the random amounts demanded.
Can they not pick a round number?

More about the real thing here.

He falls at the first hurdle, poor bugger. Sender address for any email can be modified to look like any other address. Email security typically flags it or blocks the email.

There's some genuinely scary malware out there, but this fella's an amateur. He's got one thing going for him though- the bit of the Venn diagram where the tech illiterates overlap with the porn users is huuuge.

Why'd you snip his bitcoin address though? We can all take a look see how well he's doing on his cute little scam.

One where it specifically asked me to turn my webcam on and turn it toward me ...and hit record! - weird

Ah yeah, the mods might not like it. But yeah, you can view any bitcoin address and the value of coins that's moved through it- full transaction history.

Zilch- no joy for our wannabe haxxor.

Unless he's giving different addresses for every person he sends to. Might be possible to automate that buuut... I dunno, he doesn't seem that techy.

Hang on. Did they even show you proof they had accessed your computer or taken a video of you?

Id demand to see proof if you were genuinely worried about it being real

It really undermines you when you say that with your hand in your pants.

Slightly different angle on this one ...

    Hi!

As you may have noticed, I sent you an email from your account.
This means that I have full access to your account.

I've been watching you for a few months now.
The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited.

If you are not familiar with this, I will explain.
Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device.
This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.

I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence.

Why your antivirus did not detect malware?
Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.

I made a video showing how you satisfy yourself in the left half of the screen, and in the right half you see the video that you watched.
With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks.
I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.

If you want to prevent this,
transfer the amount of $792 to my bitcoin address (if you do not know how to do this, write to Google: "Buy Bitcoin").

My bitcoin address (BTC Wallet) is: 1GoWy5yMzh3XXBiYxLU9tKCBMgibpznGio

After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear me again.
I give you 48 hours to pay.
I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter.

Filing a complaint somewhere does not make sense because this email cannot be tracked like my bitcoin address.
I do not make any mistakes.

If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed.

    Best regards!

    And Just got this one
    Hi!

As you may have noticed, I sent you an email from your account.
This means that I have full access to your account: At the time of hacking your account(<snip my email>) had this password: yi0eehc0cyvzs

You can say: this is my, but old password!
Or: I can change my password at any time!

Of course! You will be right,
but the fact is that when you change the password, my malicious code every time saved a new one!

I've been watching you for a few months now.
But the fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited.

If you are not familiar with this, I will explain.

    Bye!

Surprised he has put an 'old password' there, he's giving himself away, most people will remember - even vaguely - old passwords.

Good news is this wallet ID has 0.

Also, I am getting a lot of these as I am using an old college email that doesn't have much spam protection, I have never seen anything like this on my gmail inbox - which hopefully keeps majority of vulnerable people from receiving them.

You should have a watch of the Black Mirror episode Shut Up and Dance. It's about a scam like this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭Cyclepath

Got one of these but have to say he was a bit lax on his own security. I tracked him via his IP back to a street somewhere in Croatia. Google maps street view showed a ramshackle industrial unit.

Considered playing with him but probably best not to interact with these lads. Anyway, the poor chap already had to witness my orgasm face and unusual tastes in amateur porn.

Blackmailing appears to be another usecase for cryptocurrency, alongside it being used to purchase drugs and child porn. Mass adoption any day now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,222 ✭✭✭circadian

I got one of these claiming they have access to everything using a throwaway password from over a decade ago. Just desperately grabbing from old or rehashed pastebin dumps.

I love seeing that their wallet is empty and responding telling them how **** they are at this if they still haven't made anything from it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭AtomicHorror

I dunno if it'll be BTC, but there's a good chance some handier, less technically challenging cryptocurrency will go mainstream. BTC just has the infrastructure to make it easier to buy and use than others right now. Sure, it's used for nefarious purposes, but nowhere near as commonly as dollars are.
and authorities can't do anything with Bitcoin wallet IDs ?

Address owners can and have been identified in the past. The issue for criminals is conversion of BTC back into dollars etc. Has to be done at an exchange and most exchanges are regulated, with pretty stringent ID requirements.

If your badguy moves his BTC straight from one of those addresses to an exchange, he's basically screwed. Savvy criminals launder their BTC before they get to an exchange.

Yeah, jesus that episode was dark.

    I think they made it
child porn so you would feel less sympathy for him, but imagine if it were just a regular p0rn flick, christ .....
