Pet rats...would you?

Would you get a pet rat? Have had many pets throughout my lifetime including two dogs, a cat, a hamster and a few reptiles.

Though I hate the sewer variety...... I can't help but wonder what a pet rat would be like. I've looked up some videos online and it seems like they make good pets.

What do you think. Do you think a rat can make a loving and lovable pet.....or do you forever consider them to be a non-entity as a pet?

Lovely pets, way more intelligent than a hamster or gunipig (sp?). Best to have them in pairs though so they have company.

I worked in a house years back and the woman had some as pets. They were the freakiest things with hairless tails. I’m an animal lover and normally would be keen on anything like that but the hairless tails were just too much for me.

How would you like it if one night ...Aliens from the Planet Zog abducted you from your bedroom... only to bring you back to their Planet Zog for the purpose of using you as a cosmetic test subject....

And no..... Captain Kirk won't be there to the rescue...so think long and hard.

You need two, they crave the company of their own kind. Extremely intelligent creatures, very affectionate and easy to train. Honestly behave more like tiny little dogs than rodents. Hardest part about them is the short lifespan. I had two girls for 3.5 years and I was heartbroken when they died.

I am not entirely sure what the next pet I get in life will be. I have two or three options in mind. For all three however rats would end up be less being a pet option and more a food source for the pets I have in mind.

I'd love a couple of the giant ones - but my missus would move out if I got them (so obviously I want to keep that up my sleeve for emergencies:D)

Are you going to get a pet Asian?

Looking at reptilian options and/or maybe a bird of prey type. Not soon though. Probably in the next 5 years sometime.

So, two to keep the little things happy? Wouldn't like to get a pet rat only for it to be lonely.

I'd imagine that two rats would still be low cost to keep..... I mean a Jack Russell must seem like an African Elephant in comparison given how small they are.

Yes i'd love to get a pet rat. I've read they're a lot tamer than hamsters & gerbils anyways. They love attention too. unfortuantely i've a dog who would probably swallow it whole if he caught sight of it.

Growing up my brother had them. Lots of them. He had a white one which used be on his shoulder as he walked around the place. Still makes my skin crawl!

Fancy rats are the best. Smart, affectionate, engaging. More like owning a tiny dog than a hamster though; they need a lot of attention. And best to keep in groups of three or more, lest one of them die and leave the other alone.

I would have said no until one of my mates got two recently.

They're absolutely adorable, really friendly and super playful. It's fun watching them run around their little rat gaff messing about with their toys.

No, because I have an aversion to rodents, really not into them.

I grew up having pet rats and I can absolutely not wait to have them again, they are the best pets, right up there with dogs and cats!

It's a shame they still have such a bad reputation because they are the most affectionate, human-oriented, loyal little things, comparing them to wild rats its like comparing a dog to a wolf...years of domestication have almost turned them into a different species altogether.

Honestly, I could go on about them for hours, my heart nearly bursts just at the thought of them!

Why would they want to be domesticated? They have way to much fun in the wild.
