Ok, overweight - I'm about 115kg and made a start on running. Have an old pair of Asics but I feel I need something with more cushioning and something easy on a 40 year old joints and muscles. I was looking at the solomon speedcross trail shoes and they have good reviews. Any tips appreciated. Its 60/40 road /dirt track surface I am running on.

Those trail shoes don't look like they have a lot of cushioning. Maybe look at something like Brooks Ghosts. Go to a dedicated running shoe store and try on a bunch of shoes that have plenty of cushioning, and pick the one that feels the best on your feet! The surface you run on matters a good deal too, doing most of your running on dirt and grass would be great.
