what if you had a **** service?

Then no tip and a scathing Yelp review, it's the only way.

I say thanks to the driver, if I've had a shît journey I say thanks, but sarcastically. That'll show 'em.

I thank the bus since it's the one that has done all the work.

I blow a kiss. It's very disturbing for them.

No, I expect, when I board the bus, that the driver will get me to my destination alive.

Of course, doesn't cost you anything. Doesn't make a difference to your life either way.

I usually clap, like I do when my plane lands.

It's such a habit at this stage I do it when I'm abroad and confuse the bus driver.

Spare a thought for the driver. Endless people thanking them all day,no wonder they're grumpy.

Any bus drivers post here? I've always wondered if any actually find it annoying.

I do it anyway, social norms and that. Also, contrary to what some think its not a quaint Irish custom, people do it in lots of places.

Why does this concept of basic manners of thanking bus drivers and people's struggle with it always come up on Boards every so often?

OP, why didn't you start a thread asking do you thank a waiter when they put a plate of food in front of you or take it away when you've finished, a sales assistant when they hand you your change, a doorman who opens a door for you, a customer service agent when they answer a query for you?

They're all offering a service that you expect and you're most likely paying for but yes, a simple thank you is just basic manners or kindness that costs nothing. Why do so many on these reoccurring threads single out that simple act as some sort of bizarre behavior?

The question should be does the bus driver reply with "you're welcome" or just a grunt/slight eyebrow lift.

I usually thank them yeah, just a habit really.

I fell asleep on the nitelink once and ended up way out in malahide. Driver was bang on though, he was dropping the bus back to clontarf so he took a bit of a detour on the way to drop me home. Wouldn't even accept any money off me for it. Ledge.

Always. I even always travel on the front carriage of the train, so I can run up to the drivers cab, so I can thank them too.
