Hi, We need to take out yews trees at back of our house and we would like to add a colourful hedge that can take a south west/west facing wind. we are up high so a hedge that is durable as it will be exposed. Obviously I'd love a hedge with flowers if possible.

    Any recommendations?

Where is the best place to purchase hedges, at a good cost?
    Thanks

Too late to do anything now. You will have to wait until next Winter.
This place is worth a look.

If it is an exposed spot then white thorn could be a good choice as it is very hardy and does have flowers and nice berries. It is however also thorny and not evergreen. It is getting close to the end of the bare root season so you would need to check with the supplier you choose if they are still selling bare root hedge plants as most may have finished until next autumn. It's not true that you need to forget about doing anything until then as you can still plant potted plants although these may need more watering to settle into place when planted in drier weather with longer days. Holly might be another option if you want something evergreen and I also like Pyracantha "red column" with its spectacular red berries and berberis darwinii with its nice orange flowers.

This linked supplier price list might be of help.

While it's not too late to plant potted shrubs it is too late to cut down trees.
