Stuck on emergency tax for weeks

Hi. I’m 7 weeks into a new job. It’s not my first job. Rang payroll as soon as I started and set up the new job on my revenue account with the correct tax number etc. That was the week I started. Since then I have been on emergency tax. I’m in a loop. I ring revenue and they say they have sent on everything they need to and have issued a RPN. I ring payroll and they say they have nothing on the system. Revenue can’t understand why my employer didn’t get the information and the employer can’t understand why they can’t see what revenue has sent on. What can I do here?

Could an incorrect employer tax number have been supplied?

No, I checked this with both revenue and my payroll.

I'd be getting payroll to contact the revenue on your behalf if possible.

Thanks. I don’t think they will do so but I’ll try!

Payroll can call the employer helpline on 01 738 36 38, and they will talk them through requesting the RPN.

I'd imagine you employer receives 2 x RPN's for you when they request RPN's on each payday.

One has all you credits & cut-off

One has you on emergency tax.

As the profile the employer has for you on their payroll software is the one without the credits / cut-off, they just keep seeing the emergency tax status each week.

Ensure that they look into it further, and specifically mention the possibility of duplicate RPN's.

it's probably this alright. had the same with one of our new employees. 2 separate ID numbers were set up for him on the RPN's & the one being picked up on my payroll package was the emergency tax one as it was there 1st.

ask your payroll dept to look into this. they may need to talk to Rev directly to have the incorrect RPN removed

Hi everyone. Two weeks later and no closer to being resolved! Asked employer several times to ring revenue directly which only just happened today. Revenue swear blind they’ve done everything from their perspective, employer stating the same. Have refused to tolerate one more request to ring one/the other as there is nothing I can do. Have emailed and requested they look into duplicate RPNs, check my ops number etc but no further on.

If they definitely won’t communicate with each other again, you could try something like asking your employer to cease your employment on a Sunday and then registering you as a new employee again on the Monday and requesting a new RPN

Has your employer gone through the RPN's to see if there's a duplicate? Not just ask Revenue

        Log into your MyAccount.
Go to PAYE Services > Manage your tax 2019.
In there you will be able to see all jobs that Revenue currently think you have.
You might find that you have multiple jobs with the same employer. Look for the one that has tax credits against it. View that job.
Take a note of the "Employment ID".
Now check your payslips, they should hopefully have "RPN Number", "EmploymentID" on them. Although it depends if the software provider has chosen to print those on the payslip. If the EmploymentID doesnt match, then you've found your problem.

Multple RPNs is a common problem. Revenue have issued a guidance document on it https://www.revenue.ie/en/employing-people/documents/pmod-topics/duplicate-rpns.pdf

        There are two solutions.
        1) If the employer has multiple concurrent Employment's, then they need to close one of them off. They do that by submitting a zero value payroll submission with a leaving date, and 0 M class weeks. They should follow the document above.
        2) You can just re-assign your tax credits and SRCOP to the active Job matching the EmploymentID on your payslip.

        Best of luck,
