Designing an efficient utility room

I have a small utility room. It is relatively functional but just not good enough as its often left quite untidy as there are no specific places for certain things.

It does a lot to be fair, washing machine, storage for white& color dirty laundry, storage for glass & plastic recycle, storage for brushes and mops & cleaning equipment & a coat rack on the door, along with housing the fuse board for the house.

thats a lot for a room thats about 1.2m x 2.6m, but i dont think we are using the space very efficiently.

Ive had consultations with the Ikea design guys & with cash&carry kitchens, but all they do is open up an application on the pc and drag on a few cupboards, which i know wont work as ive tried it.

Are there specialists who help with this kind of design & whats a rough ball park cost?

Might be a silly option to suggest, if you're uncomfortable with it, but you could just build it yourself.

If you're in Louth/Meath there's a company called Hoey's DIY. If you're in dublin there's a place called Woodworkers. I'm sure there are more around the country.

You can send them a cutting list and they'll cut the wood to the size you want. So effectively they deliver an ikea unit to you.

It only gets complicated if you start adding doors, drawers, etc. if you're happy with open shelving, you are effectively just drawing a few rectangles. Can be cheap and cheerful. I've done it a fair bit in the past and have a project underway at the moment that i'll be ordering from Hoey's DIY for.

Just get 18mm white melamine faced chipboard. You'd probably kit the whole room out for 300-400 handy enough.

There is only really one way to lay out a space of this size really, shelves and a counter along one of the long walls. There really isn’t that much other design to do apart from dividing up the storage, but that is something you have to decide for yourself.

I would leave space for a separate dryer at a later stage. But that’s just me.

Small rooms are not necessarily an efficient use of space unfortunately. Half the space is more or less used by the circulation/walking space. If the utility room has two doors it is even worse.
