    hello folks,

will be doing a large extension and will be using mostly 7 x 3 timbers. Most saws cut a max 65mm depth but I wonder if there is a bigger saw to cut 75mm depth? Or is this impractical.

    Thanks for your thoughts

Have you done much carpentry work before John?

will do it, its a big beast, maybe north of 800 lids pre VAT, weighs about 25 kgs and needs to be treated with caution as the whole arm will be gone in a twinkle

Picked up one of these bad boys for small money on Donedeal...it has cut everything on our build so far. Builder wants to take it home with him! :D

Had to buy some parts for the blade guard (make sure to check that if going secondhand route) but got them easy enough and it is working fine now.

What are you using the 7x3 for? CLS for timber frame external walls is 140 x 38.

If it's just a few rafters then you can cut them easily with a good hand saw, but again 3" is quite thick.

FWIW I've an unused box of 75mm (SAE 250/76) face fix joist hangers if they're any use to you.

    Where are you using 7x3’s?
What type of roof are you doing? Flat?
You do not need a mitre saw, no matter what type of roof you are doing.
For me nothing beats makita saws. We have a a few Makita 5903r’s and one Makita 5008mgaj.
The 5904 is more durable and will last a lifetime. The 5008 is a bit more delicate but has more power and has no riving knife if that makes any difference to you. Both cut 3”.

    thanks for replies lads,

have done a little carpentry mainly with hand saw and an old skill saw. Thought its time now I splashed out on something good.
60 joists to be cut. Head height is an issue hence the 7x3. I would imagine a mitre saw is no good here, I need another skill saw. Do you just flip over the joist and complete cut from other side with the regular skill saw?

    cheers

Yeah, you can flip it or finish the last bit with a hand saw from the same side.

A 216mm mitre e.g. Bosch GCM 8 will cut 70mm which only leaves 5mm to go for unfinished, or use planed which will probably be 70mm, but you're looking at 350 for something which won't get a lot of use afterwards, and if you're just cutting joists square you don't need a mitre.

Why not rent a large big bladed skill saw . rather than buying some large bandy saw outright that will have no future personal use.

And I use the word bandy because it's unwieldy and useless for anything else.

If your problem is lack of head height, why are you using a suspended timber floor design?

It could be the roof, not clear from post.
