Green Beech discolouration

    Hi All,

    I came across this very dark discolouration on the bark of a approx. 30 year old green beech tree. See the attached pics - does anyone have an idea what the discolouration is? and if is a threat to the tree or nearby trees? The tree is otherwise looking healthy.

    Could it be an accumulation of bird crap, is there a branch they could perch on above it?

    Looks like dried out algae to me.

    If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

    Probably rain water running off of the tree at that point has given algae a chance to grow and now has dries out.
