Second Vehicle Insurance

I have a car with private insurance and full no claims bonus. The children are complaining about the farm smell in the car. And using the car for the farm work is ruining it.

I am considering getting a small 4x4 for farm use. I was thinking about a Suzuki Grand Vitara or Kia Sorento. My farm mileage would be around 5K km a year.

I have car insurance with Allianz. They tell me that they will not provide commercial vehicle insurance on a vehicle that was modified to become a commercial. Also, I would not get any credit for the no claims I have on my car insurance. They quote me 1300 for insurance on a Ford Ranger.

Has anyone figured out a cost effective way of running a second vehicle for farm use?

Have you rang around other insurance companies and brokers?
AXA seem to be mentioned a fair bit when this issue comes up.

Try FBD, they are reasonable and will do older 4x4's third party only, if you have your farm and/or home insured with them it will be a bonus.

    Thanks. I have contacted FBD.

They give a level of 'mirroring' for a portion of the no claims bonus. In addition, they do not differentiate between factory configured commercial versus modified passenger.

They are quoting 820 which is a big improvement.

Fbd also give an 80e discount if you are a member of the IFA.............

Not that I'm condoning or endorsing them. Lol

Was trying the same, had a vehicle that I modified /commercialised, Zurich wouldn't insure it. Got a quote for new policy, 1,250e for tft, asked for quote for tp, it came to 1,750.

How do ye mean modified as take out back seats and weld the safety belts

FBD do seem to be the best option. It looks like many insurance providers will not accept vehicles that were converted to commercial. FBD will quote for any vehicle that is tax classified as commercial.

FBD gives a 75 discount for IFA members. This is a substantial saving.

@ lab man : Some passenger vehicles can be converted to commercial. The main change is to remove the back seats. But there are other modification needed also and some conditions also. The RSA have a FAQ on the process.

I have limited experience of other insurance companies but have found Liberty insurance very helpful and competitive. I'd definitely recommend contacting them for a quote, I changed policies last year and found them far more competitive than others.

Ah here. Did you go marrying a townie for feck sake?

Don't be giving into that guff now. They'll be getting notions. A few days out on the bog in the Summer will knock it out of them and sort that out fairly lively

    :P

But as a serious part of my answer, yes, it is my understanding that for the second vehicle you need to build up a second no-claims record for that on its own. Not that the first part wasn't serious too ;)

A small 20 year or older 4x4 insured on a classic policy would be your cheapest option. Insurance would most likely be circa €300.

Hi OP - I was in a similar position

My car is on private insurance, full NCB for 10+ years etc and I wanted to get a jeep on the road for around the farm.

I ended up paying around €500 (not sure of the exact figure but it was low 500's) for insurance on a 06 Pajero. That actually included a small bit extra I paid for open drive so that basically anyone over 25 with a full licence can drive it as my brother would drive it when he's around as well.

    I got it through insuremyvan.ie .

You know the way insurance is funny - My NCB is tied to my own car and that was then no use to me. However, what brought the cost down massively for me was that I could use the fact that I was a named driver on my wife's insurance for 9+ years at the same time.

So my understanding of it was that, I have now started a second NCB on the jeep, but at the start of it they are giving me credit for my 9+ years as a named driver. They were quite persnickety about getting written proof of being a named driver for the 9 years. Obviously, my wife has changed insurance providers a few times in the last few years so I had to reach out to all companies that she was with to get a letter from them to cover that period. But once I got that, all was good and I am covered now.

So in summary, if you have been a named driver anywhere else outside of your own car, you can use that to bring the cost of your new policy down.

I looked at the link you posted and it looks great. I have a 92 Pajero that I have parked up at the minute and I would love to keep it taxed & insured to give it the odd spin.

Just very briefly, do you know, can you join IVETA personally, or do you have to join a club that is a member of IVETA (if that makes sense).

I joined them directly at the ploughing.
You can join when you take out the insurance through them .
Best thing would be talk to the lads in campions about it

@ Donald Trump : I can't blame the wife - she has never complained. I do spend a lot of time now ferrying car loads to training, matches and other activities. It is better for me to keep the farm separate from the car.

@ 9935452 : The classic/vintage car option is a great idea. But it's not for me. I wouldn't be handy enough to keep it repaired and wouldn't have the time for tricking with it.

@ BnB : Thanks for the suggestion. I am named on my wife's insurance for years. I will check out insuremyvan. Thanks.
