I am in the market for a new laptop and was wondering if anyone has bought from Dell Outlet shop/ From time to time there seems to be bargains in refurbished laptops. I cannot find any reviews on the Dell Irish site . They also sell older stock as new but unused.

I wouldn't pay attention to the reviews. I've ordered at least 5 times in the past 10 years, always a brilliant service and fantastic products. As people have said though, it's rare to find a bargain, but if you do, go for it!

I’ve owned several Dells, laptops and desktops, and their performance always fails to impress. The poor speed is always an issue and I don’t find them very user friendly. We have desktops in work which do the job, but if I had the extra few euro I’d go for something better

every brand has products spanning the range of segments from cheap to mid-range to expensive.

the cheapest models are going to have have worse specs than the higher-end stuff and not be as well-built.

you can't generalise across a brand.

Dell mid-range stuff and up is good - e.g. inspiron 7000 range and up. (that's 800 euro and up normal price)

cheap stuff ok to not great.

have used dell refurbished and no issues for me.

Not bad, but the hard drive would put me off. Definitely need to upgrade to an SSD immediately.

I bought this laptop with the i5 processor about 6/7 months ago. It was extremely slow to start up (the hard drive) took 1min 30sec to boot up and then more time trying to open programmes like word etc., the screen isn't great has some anti-reflective coating which makes some programmes menus look crap/pixilated. But rather than ditching and picking up another laptop I upgraded the boot drive to an m.2 ssd 256gb and added an extra 8gb of ram (16gb total) and the computer is much faster. all this for circa €120 but definitely cheaper than buying another laptop. boot up is now 35sec and programmes open quickly. I kept the 1tb hard drive for storing photos etc.

In summary, the monitor could be much better, replacing the hard drive is straight forward and upgrading the ram. If the price is good then it may be worth a punt if you're willing to upgrade parts

The SSD provided 99% of the speed improvement. The RAM would have little effect there. Just to save others some money if they decide to follow suit.

SSD vs HDD is no contest. The SSD will always win, even it is a Core i9 processor with a HDD vs an Atom of some form with an SSD. Even the lower end of the SSD market will show an incredible change.

Correct, I should have clarified that a bit more. SSD is the reason for the speed boost. The ram was upgraded due to some ram hungry software.

SSD and ram purchased from crucial

I really don't know how machines even ship with old school hard drives. I've had SSDs in every laptop since 2008, would never go back.

My memory have 240GB SSDs for 29euro delivered. Simply no excuse not to upgrade.

It's true, but a lot of people just aren't technically minded to even know the difference, never mind undertake the work to swap. Even though it's an incredibly easy process. It won't be too long before HDDs in laptops die off completely I'd say. Perhaps there's another couple of years but it is slipping a lot.
