Raise TV license to save DWTS

So latest wheeze (as reported in Sunday Indo) to increase tv license for RTE is that they need the extra cash to be able to afford to keep DWTS.

Now I know it’s the Sindo, but if this is true it’s beyond ridiculous. What next...extra 10e on it to keep Tubbs or the weather forecast??

I’d rather they work to their budget and don’t demand my money for their folly

    what is DWTS?

Dancing With the Stars, fronted by someone who seems to have become famous on RTE2 late night TV.

I wouldn't believe a word of that. The Sindo has morphed over years into a red top. Terrible journalism bar the very odd investigative piece. It's stuffed full of z list celebrities all hoping to have a bit of news which I suspect is the source for that story.

I'd be happy to pay a TV licence hike to fund the early retirement of Tubs and Co.

RTE should be 100% public service only. News, weather, educational stuff, programming supporting the arts and national sports. Everything else should only be on private TV stations.

Isn't DWTS sponsored, and RTE want more money to air it? Why don't they just look for a higher bidder, or drop it.

Sponsored, a premium rate text entry for voting and a viewers prize with additional premium rate text entry.

    Those 'celebs' mustn't come cheap.

    Or the presenters.

This feels like an avenue too sensible to be pursued by what's probably a very common emotion for TV networks: sheer terror, at the utterly changed media landscape that now exists. Big networks are obviously able to pivot more ably in whatever direction works, but RTÉ don't have the audience, reach or the nous to ever consider downscaling to something so aggressively 'public service' in the face of a widening market. It would likely read as counter productive to panicked executives, who probably believe the answer is 'more money' - even though they're even less able to keep parity with other networks than ever. The Sunk Cost fallacy, as it's known IIRC

The “celebs” earn €3,000 a week

Another gem is for the prize which was to Florida on last weeks show they actually sent over Jake Carter to advertise it, so much for running a tight ship, at 42 minutes or so...

I wonder how much they're paying the contestants now? They were paying the "stars" 3k a week in the first season. It's probably gone up near 5k now and that doesn't include set, staff, presenters, pro dancers etc.

The worst thing is the RTE "stars" get paid twice.

That was leaked 3 years ago. You can be sure that figure is gone well up now.

    what is DWTS?
    Dancing With The Staff.

It's not educational, it's not public service broadcasting.

It's commercial, except it can't pay it's way, so goodbye.

It ain't Hands or Waterways or Resistance or Living The Wildlife or Screenshort or Other Voices.
