How does the VRT payment work on importing a hybrid from the UK

    Hi all,

As the title suggest I'm looking at importing a Golf GTE from the UK, I understand that once I have the car back in Ireland I must book a VRT inspection with the NCTS. There they determine how much VRT I am supposed to pay, quick searches online suggest it should be around €850 for a 2016 GTE.

However, I see I am entitled to a repayment of up to €1750 for a PHEV of this age. Am I charged the VRT at all? Or do I pay it and then have to claim it back later?

The VRT calculator has the exemption already built in, so whatever it is telling you is what you will need to pay.

Looks to me like you would be paying ~€1k VRT when you import a 2016 GTE, possibly more if its the higher spec version. It depends on mileage as well. Plug in your figures to the calculator for the car you have found and you will know for sure then.

€850 good luck with paying only that, be prepared if they can't find your model and make you wait .. what month, spec and mileage is it

That's disappointing to hear. I don't have exact specs as I'm still looking but the only variables are when the car was registered and the mileage as all the GTE's have the same specs, (pre-2017).

I put in a GTE with 55,000 miles and a first registered date of January 2016 and got about €1k back, keeping the same mileage I changed the registered date to December 2015 and got about €600. Can't seem to figure out how they cactually calculate the value.

Disappointed in only having to pay 1k vrt?
Think about how much you’ll save by buying in the UK in the first place.

It was 1150 for an i3 Rex when I checked last month, so for gte golf of the same year, 850 sounds cheap.
