Dehorning calves

    Hi

    Another calf question please!

Do you all use an anaesthetic before dehorning your calves? Calves about 3-4 weeks old. I know by law you are supposed to if the calf is over 2 weeks but do farmers actually do it? If so where do you get the anaesthetic & how do you give it? I have a dehorning crate but year's ago when we did have calves we never gave any. Very stressful for the poor calf.

    Thanks!

Any calf over 2 weeks of age will need an anesthetic before dehorning but calves under 2 weeks will benefit from it also.

The anesthetic will be prescribed by your vet in the quantity you need for the calves you are doing at the time.

An injection of three day painkiller is ' nice' too.Your vet can show you where to inject.
