Probably a silly question but if I do'nt ask I will never know. Is it possible to swap a working SSD from a dead laptop to a new laptop (HDD, never booted) if the SSD is compatible with the new laptop. Or will the new laptop have to be booted, the SSD then wiped and cloned and then fitted.. Thanks in advance.

It should work without any problems in my experience. I've done it a couple of times.
