I've a section of ceiling that needs to be repaired. It is roughly 16x16 inches after I squared it off. Is it simply a case of cutting a section of plasterboard to size and screwing it in place, then filling and smoothing the gap or how should I go about doing it?

Yep - you'll also need to attach furring strips on the other side of the ceiling to support the patch, just place them to the left and right of the hole and screw through the ceiling into them - lots of vids online of this.
Also, depending on where joists are etc. you could just attach a strip between to joists which would be a better support for the patch.

Then decide if you want to use regular tape or mesh tape...some say mesh is better for something like this as less prone to cracking

i would definetly screw in the piece and would probably use normal filler instead of the 2 part but it does work.

also the ending is a little ropy language wise . DAD lol
