Should we drug prisoners with antipsychotics?

To reduce violence? I was given them once for psychotic, homicidal thoughts and they worked, though had a bit of side effects.

I don't see the argument against it, violation of rights? well perhaps make it optional and maybe give the option of antipsychotics as opposed to going to prison.

Any reason you can think of?

Having helped out a good bit lately in CAMH, believe me, the last thing you want to do is give the wrong anti-psychotic to the wrong person!!

If anything, lithium seemed the absolute wonder drug when it came to bringing highly manic people/people in a psychotic back to lucidity -it really is a wonder drug at times, if a qualified doctor told me how effective it can be before seeing it, I probably wouldn't have believed them or thought they were exaggerating- but then again there are probably a tonne of reasons to not give that to the wrong person either.

    Brains are complicated.

Why not give them to everyone, so no one can ever be violent?
Any reason you can think of why not?

Would it be 100% effective though? and would it actually reduce violent thoughts?

Reminds be a bit of clockwork orange, Alex has a physical repulsion towards violence, though we know deep down he's still violent by nature. I think any sort of rehabilitation has to be a genuine, intrinsic effort made by the individual.

Contraceptives should be added to the water supply along with lithium to combat social ills.

    Give them cornstarch.

Who sits there... on this, the feast day of our national saint, thinking about whether the prison population needs to be drugged?

Prisoners I imagine. They are traditionally known to be particularly fond of the ole Turkish rugs.

Massive doses of Fentanol would reduce recidivism.

In all fairness though, giving them free oxycodone, morphine and valium/xanax would stop the drug smuggling in the prison while making the whole prison atmoshpere more mellow.

I imagine the prison guards would have an easier job as well. No more violence but a lot of vomit and unconscious/dead prisoners....ahh well you can't have it all..:D

Giving someone an anti psychotic drug , when they don't actually need it , can have serious detrimental effects on the person .

Maybe not the effects you were thinking of in the OP :)

Give them 2000ug of LSD and watch them live in their mind’s personal hell for the rest of their lives.

Most of them are on the spectrum so a diagnosis and counselling might do the trick

Or high grade heroin whatever is the cheapest

I'm here to cooperate with ya a hundred percent. A hundred percent. I'll be just right down the line with ya, you watch. 'Cause I think we ought to get to the bottom of R. P. McMurphy.
