    Hi all,

A lot of us bought this Bargain Alert tablet for €119 last year and it was truly a bargain!

I was recently struggling to install an upgrade to Android 8.0 so got some help from Lenovo Support and all ended well.

I guess I must now be on their alert email list for this model of tablet as today I got an email linking to new Open Source Code for Tab4 8 Plus(TB-8704F/TB-8704X), see https://support.lenovo.com/ie/en/downloads/ds539060.

Two things I'm looking for help/input on.

    1. When I go into Settings -> System -> System Update it doesn't offer me the new software Lenovo sent me a link to, it says my system is up to date. Any idea why the update isn't showing on the OTA service?

    2. When I manually download the zip folder and extract it to /sdcard/it doesn't install, all I get is an "Exception Found!(error)" message.

It's frustrating that Lenovo don't include installation instructions with the update.

Maybe it's supposed to be obvious and I'm too thick :o

Anyway, if someone with this tablet manages to install the new software please let me know how you did it!!

You are on the latest version for this model. There's no other update for this.

I mean there's nothing else available OTA.

Never knew these got past Nougat. Haven't turned on mine in months.

So what exactly did they release on Wednesday then? I updated to 8.1.0 weeks ago.

    Seems like kernel source code.

this tablet won't be upgraded any further to a more recent version of android i.e. pie.

probably was doing well to get an Oreo update.

It's been a while (at least 4 years) since I last messed around with custom ROM's etc but the hardware on this Tablet deserves to be kept going so in due course I'll probably start reading https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet/general/lenovo-tab-4-8-plus-aka-tb-8704f-x-t3654605 and figure out how to put a custom ROM on it to keep it functional.

I started doing this with the HP Touchpad in 2011 and kept it functional until this Lenovo came along last year. Doubt I'll get 7 years out of this though!!

if it's popular enough to have developer interest then it may have custom roms adapted for it alright.

doesn't seem to be too much going on in that forum tho.

an active forum would be device specific and have custom roms etc.

like this for the mi pad 4 tablet

    Hi,

There's some new software out for this device (https://support.lenovo.com/ie/en/downloads/ds539060) but no instructions on how to install it.

Can anyone advise? I tried downloading directly to the tablet and unzipping the zip folder but that didn't end well as it asked to replace existing files and eventually the unzipping just froze. Tried it a few times and tried using different zip apps without success.

I'm not sure but if you register and post here you'll get an answer probably

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet

Lenovo released the kernels for this tablet (which was making development on custom roms impossible beforehand) so there are now custom rom options available once you know/learn how to root the device etc

btw that link gives me a page not found error

I doubt that it's much of an update though really - it's not like they are going to bring it up to pie at this point

normally you should be able to get updates OTA (over the air) by checking for them in system updates
