I want to install the latest ubuntu onto PC but I keep getting a black screen straight after the purple screen and then hear a login sound. I have used rufus to create a boot USB

I also tried ubuntu 12 04 and it works but in settings my display is seen as laptop with no way of changing size and the wifi doesn't work

    My specs are
    Gigabyte ab 350 gaming
    Drevo 120ssd
    2tb segate
    Corsair h60
    Sapphire r9 380x nitro 4gb
    Ryzen 5 1600x
    N600 USB tplink

You tried Ubuntu 12.04? That's well out of date. Try the latest Ubuntu 18.04 LTS point release.

I tried the latest ubuntu first and I keep getting the black screen on the VGA port on my gpu. I then tried earlier version to see if it made any difference and it did with problems. My screen in the settings was showing as a laptop and my wireless didn't work either. I even tried opensuse and still black screen on a live version after the boot loader.

VGA port? You sure? There shouldn't be a VGA port on that card.

Are you plugging your monitor into the motherboard instead of the GPU by any chance?

My monitor only has a VGA port on it and its connected by a dvi to VGA adapter that came with card and its plugged into the top port .DVI-I

Theirs no VGA port on the board only dvi and hdmi and they don't work as my CPU is only a ryzen 5 1600x with no gpu like the new ryzen apu

I have now tried ubuntu 14.04 and it's working with an issue. The issue now is my screen is showing as unknown and cannot change screen size and wifi only showing 2.4GHz and not 5GHz

Hi dmcm_90. If you are going to use no longer supported versions of Ubuntu then I'd advise to not have that machine on the internet for security reasons. Does your computer have a model/name? It's handy to look up issues with Linux compatibility and particular machines.

Theres no model number for my PC as I built it my self. The original post includes make and model of the parts. I'd prefer to use the latest versions. I'm only using live CDs of older ones to try see if it's the version or what

I'd advise posting the issue here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions. It's a great forum.

Have you tested any other distros as Live sessions??

It might be worthwhile to try to narrow down the problem.

Hi Johnboy1951. Yes, OP - try a non-Ubuntu distro like Manjaro or Solus, etc.

Have you tried another screen with hmdi / dvi. I.e. without the adapter? Your TV maybe.
I remember some component I bought (mobo possibly?) Stated it didn't support VGA with an adapter.

Though as you say if it works with older versions that might not be the case.

Maybe its time to resurect xorg.conf :-)

its most likely that your distro wants to install a non-free graphics driver but ubuntu and debian dont support non-free packages by default, they can be enabled though. a distro like linux mint or peppermint os should give you less issues because they do add them out of the box.
