VRT question

Hi

I’m living in Portugal for the last 18 months, I plan to return to Ireland in 6 months or so, my neighbor is English and is selling his English reg car, I’m thinking of buying it and bringing it back to Ireland in six months.

Would I qualify for an exemption because of this?

In theory you can import a foreign reg’d car but in reality you should not, as a long term resident of Portugal, be driving a UK reg’d car in Portugal. On that basis I would expect your claim for a VRT exemption to be refused. The exemption is to allow you to import a car which is part of your foreign life. You should not, based on the EU directive (have no idea how incorporated into Portuguese law) be driving a UK reg’d car in Portugal so you will raise a red flag if you Clare m a VRT ToR exemption in respect of it.

As part of the exemption don't you need to prove that the car is in use under your ownership in the country of residency also ie. taxed and insured? How would you tax and insure a UK registered car in Portugal?

Portugal has a similar setup to Ireland in terms of VRT, but there are some loop holes, it is possible to tax and insure U.K. plates here. Lots of English with yellow plates where I live.

Are you going to register the car in your name in portugal?

If so, yes you would be able to apply for an exemption.

If not, no.
