I have a Peugeot 508 SW 1.6 HDI Active (2011) and I suspect the timing belt has gone on it. the previous owner thought it had been changed but had no documentation for it, and I assumed it had been done. It's got just just under 200k KM on the odometer.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving home late at night and it just suddenly lost power and then cut out - nothing else noticeable, no bangs or smoke etc. I tried restarting but it just turns over and dies.

I had an OBD diagnostic connector and I plugged it in and it gives error P0016: (ODBII) Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

Any ideas how serious this is and what I'd be looking at to get it sorted out?

As it was late at night and I live in a remote rural area, I got the car towed home so I'll either need it repaired at my house or else transported to a mechanic, so looking to find out if any mechanic can do it or if it needs to go to a main dealer?

You need to diagnose /see yourself at home if the crankshaft is turning WITHOUT the camshaft turning , you'll need to pull back one cover , and get a second person to turn the car over on the key .although when you pull back this cover you my see a disintegrated timing belt , in which case no need to turn over .
If the belt has snapped I'd say go for a good secondhand engine that you can verify.

Never assume when it comes to a timing belt. Wasn't the mileage written on the belt cover, showing when it was last done?

    Yep
    My 1.6tdci engine went .
Got one from a scrapyard, was told ye 100% it is.
    Fitted it,nope definitely not 100% .
Mechanic friend even said it's hard to find a good used 1.6tdci engine.

I believe the DW10 engine (2.0 HDi) is designed so only the cam followers break if the timing belt snaps, but I don't think this engine is designed the same way (not to mention its other various flaws).
