E82 driver's door window regulator gave up the ghost this morning. I went at it this evening and it looks like the motor snarled up the cable. Is it worth my while buying a genuine new regulator or are the cheaper aftermarket ones less likely to break in the future?

You can pay several times more money by oem, but you can get the same result. Aftermarket does not mean bad quality. There is always possible to improve the quality by proper lubrication. Remember the WD40 is not that kind of lubrication. I using the advanced synthetic grease what are designed for plastic gears, rubber parts etc. I know most of boardies does not understand why to lubricate the brand new parts. Open the brand new oem one and there is almost 0 gram grease on the gears. Add load of grease and it will last tens of years. The next thing what most of members ever heard are to lubricate the windows frames. Take a cotton puds, little advanced synthetic grease and apply the grease to the slot on window frame. Not too much, only little amount and the window works much smoother.

Id go genuine if it was me.
I got one replaced on my a4 last week.
My mechanic advised genuine as he said the spurious ones can give trouble with the overload.
