Best way to make space for a bike is to make a bike-sized space.

Perfectly functional fixie/single speed for sale for sweet fanny Adams. This was the wife's commuter for a good few years when she had a shorter commute to work. Loads of miles on it, loads of environmental marks and chips and dings from being leant and locked against a zillion lunchtime lampposts. This will not win any conventional beauty contests but nor will it turn any thieving heads.
Perfect cheap as chips low-maintainance commuter, though I can't tell you how many headsets, bottom brackets, sprockets, pads, wheels etc it's been through. But it's always been kept in functional over aesthetic condition.
