How do you feel about all the "females only" displays

So how does this "females only" thing make you feel? You see it on a lot of lettings for room renting... presumably by women. It'd strange if a man requested only men.

I can't say it's unfair because every house owner has their own freedom to do so. But never the less, if the reverse scenario was happening, we'd probably have to constantly hear women whine on the radio about how such notices are discriminatory.

For most cases the owner may not be involved at all

A room comes free and the other housemates will put up the ad and choose who they want. I’ve been that prospective housemate demonstrating how cool I am  and I’ve been on the other side meeting others who want to move in

If they can pay rent and are sound well the owner doesn’t need a huge checklist, not the same as when renting an entire property

Whilst females only is more common I seen a few places that said men only. Never thought it was weird. Also, a lot would be house shares where they want to keep the same gender ratio as before the person moved out. So, if it's a guy moving out they'd want a guy moving in or vice versa.

would it be weirder if it was men looking for females only?

That's the thing, I don't think an all guys house would insist on stopping a female.

If they had to endure some of the females I house shared with before they would definitely think twice! :D I still get shivers thinking about some of the stuff I witnessed.

yeah, but don't try and pass it off as if those notices are anywhere near as common.

If anything, men are preferred. A certain cohort of women will shower mornings, noon, and night and run up the electricity bill through both the shower and the use of hair dryers, straightners, oven use, phone charging for social media, etc. They are also likely to want visitors to the house more, and can take over the living room. They will watch more TV, such as neighbours, Eastenders, and Home & Away which are on more frequently.

It's definitely not and I'm a guy so I know the pain of looking for rooms to rent and finding a decent percentage are women only.

Definitely seen it done on DAFT. Lads wanting to keep it a lads house.

Where it's not a licensee relationship e.g. a house share without the 'LL' present is it not discriminatory though?

I hear of guys getting house shares a lot through friends, compared to girls. I think a house full of girls like to vet and make the process more formal, from my experience, and that's why there are more women only ads on Daft.

    Obviously this is just anecdotal!

Bathrooms covered in vomit after a night out with trails leading to the bedrooms, left for days on end without being cleaned up. Used tampons (yes used) barely wrapped in tissue and left in a pyramid on the bathroom window sill. Also used sanitary pads “falling” out of rubbish bags on their way downstairs, great craic when they stick to your socks. One girl who moved out, had left her whole room covered with rubbish such as takeaway cartons and general waste piled 2 ft high off the floor.

It's illegal, and in breach of equality legislation.

You're saying women use more phone battery than men?

Phone charging surely accounts for only a fraction of the electricity bill, and don't most people leave their phone chargers plugged in anyway?

and don't most people leave their phone chargers plugged in anyway?

Phone chargers do not use the same power without a phone attached to them. The cheaper and nastier they are the higher their vampire draw is, but its still a lot less than when charging. So little that you need to value your time quite lowly to see the time spent plugging them out as saving money - but of course there are safety reasons to plug them out.

But as per the first part of your post - it really isn't a lot. Not compared to hair straighteners (mentioned elsewhere in the post you quoted) anyway!

I have no problem with female or male only advertisements. It's understandable that there's more female only ads as there is a 'feeling more secure and safe' part to it no doubt. Some women wouldn't feel comfortable in a house share with a man unknown to them beforehand.

    This. Voice of reason!

It seems reasonable, I've always shared with a group of lads and if any of them left they would be replaced by another lad. It's usually the same with women and they would probably feel more comfortable in a house share with other girls.

I never had an issue with it. I'm a male and have done a few houseshares and 'Female Only' ads are definitely more common than male only.

Sure, it was annoying at times but if that's what the tenants were comfortable with then who is anybody to complain.

    .

Men only requests isn’t strange, when I house shared and looked after filling the rooms I always put “men only” in the add as having a woman living there would mess up the dynamic of the house. I often saw other ads with men only too.

I also always put professionals only etc.

As someone who has shared with lots of people over the years, women have to be the worst for not cleaning up.

I was showing a house to a girl a couple years back and she made the statement "You keep the house very clean for boys". She moved in and she was absolutely filthy, never changed the bins, swept the floor, cutlery not washed properly, bath plughole full of hair.

Another girl then used to complain about the hall light being left on overnight the odd time (40 watts) yet filled up the kettle (2 thousand watts) all the way to the top for a cup of tea. Constantly left her bra and knickers on the radiators all throughout the house. You'd be eating rice krispies and you'd have a thong staring in your face.
