My son's iPhone SE has a badly cracked screen. According to Apple's repair options, it should cost €151 to repair it. But when I put in all his details, the final bill (including "tax") comes to €292. That's a hell of a difference. Anybody had similar experience? Would I be better off taking it to Compu B?

Where does it say it would only cost €151?

Replaced screen on 6 plus in Bangkok for 30euro.... I’m sure there’s places in Ireland too that are willing to replace screen for a lot less than what apple want

Yeah my wife got her SE screen replaced in a place on Baggot Street for €50 (I think), but it wasn't a great job, the new screen was much less responsive than the original and she found it very frustrating.

For an SE just go to your local Chinese electronic store. It will be fine. It's not worth spending huge money on.

But the screen will be a cheap knockoff. What difference does it make if it’s an SE?

Well, as I mentioned above, it wasn't fine when my wife got hers repaired "cheaply".

I'd love to know how Apple's final price almost doubled from the price list to the quote I ended up with. What's the point in having a price list if the actual cost bears no relation to it?

Because a chinese knock off today could possibly be better quality than a 2016 SE screen.
An SE screen is not amazing like a iPhone Xs that cannot be matched.

Also, they offer higher end and lower end screens.

Last year I smashed my iPhone 8 Plus screen. Apple price was crazy and also would have no phone for a 10 days which would have been painful.

Went to an electronic store in Bray. Offered two screens. One genuine knock off (you know what I mean) and one "Apple Screen". I think prices were €89 or €139.

I was extremely scepitcal but he was adamant that the screen I would get was sourced from the factory that Apple use and he showed me how it looked in a phone.

Decided to go for it. Before he installed it he showed me the screen with Apple logos on parts but I was still very sceptical.

6 months later, and I'm more than happy. Screen is top notch and performs just as good as the original: I really did not expect it.

If the OP wants to PM me I can send the shop details but I think the saving is worth it and not all "knock-offs" are bad.

like anything out there..u can get good 3rd party repairs and bad 3rd party repairs....i know in my case it was probably better than the original.

In regard to response times of phone...i think apple have built obsolescence into their updates now so it might be the software as much as screen...

Nothing is further from the truth. In fact it’s the opposite. Apple support their devices longer than any other manufacturer. iPhone 5s released 2013 (6 years ago) is still supported by the latest iOS release. Find another phone that’s that old still getting full android updates.

Apple support their phones but glass is glass and glass will break if it’s abused.

It looks from their website like they only seem to repair Macs...? There's no mention of phones anywhere...

my wife has a i phone 7 plus which was totally ruined after the above update..microphone not working....showed it to compub in galway...would do nothing for her...showed it to apple in Belfast...they offered her chance to buy a new iphone 7 at reduced price ..
