Laptop for Video Editing

I'm looking for a laptop for 2 purposes:
1 - General Computing (Internet, word processing, etc.)
2 - Video Editing. Premiere Pro specifically.

I always wanted a mac just because they're pretty but my research is telling me that I'll get more for my money with a PC and I think macs might be better set up for Final Cut than Premiere Pro.

8gb seems to be the recommended RAM but I'm thinking for it to work well I need to go to 16gb. In terms of the video content, it'd be 1080p max. No 4k.

I don't really know a lot about tech but so far I've found this and wonder if it seems appropriate or if there are better and/or cheaper alternatives. I didn't necessarily want to spend this much but it seems to be the going rate for 16gb laptops. I think the graphics card for it is suited to my purposes.

Min specs you should be aiming for is 16 GB RAM (8 maybe sufficient, more the better, budget dependent). 32 may be too pricey.
i7 rather than i5, and a SSD (256 bare min, 512 or more.

For video editing, screen size may be a factor - unless you're aiming on using a monitor.

This Dell matches the MSI spec, plus screen is 15" rather than 14":

    ( i7-8565U / 16 GB RAM / 512 SSDHD / 2Mb Nvidia MX150)

Price: €1,198.99 - use code LUCKY120 to get 120 euro off as well (valid until 2019-03-06 - this Wednesday)

Main downside is it will ship from China so delivery may be a couple of weeks.

is the same as above, but 17" screen '2 in 1' - i.e. the screen can be folded back on itself to make a (heavy) tablet.

€1,399.00 and also eligible for the LUCKY120 discount.

Thanks Niska, that's a great suggestion and a saving as well!
And it's not bad looking either.

buy the cheapest version and then buy an m.2 ssd stick 2280 size off amazon and put it in to run windows off of.

cheaper than buying the more expensive Dell with the ssd in it

imo 17 inch laptop way too heavy for 2-in-1 use as a tablet so probably better off to go for non-touch model if there is a saving.

No doubt this is good advice but I'm not entirely sure what it means. Probably not for me so.

Yes, I'm not pushed by the tablet aspect although the bigger screen would be nice. I imagine though that i'll just output to a second monitor when editing though.

If I am honest I would just get this https://www.dell.com/en-ie/work/shop/laptops/dell-g5-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5587-laptop/BN55824

Gives you the m.2 drive, a 1tb for storage, a great GPU, CPU and RAM for around the same price

this version with the 1060 card which would have plenty of power for video editing - leagues ahead of the mx 150 card (multiple times the power) is the one to go for

    https://www.dell.com/en-ie/work/shop/laptops/dell-g5-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5587-laptop/bn55822

8gb ram but buy another 8gb stick (2 slots available) and put it in

< 10 minute job involving a few screws.

Is this one still better than the one gibgodsman posted even though it's an i5 and his was an i7.

I sure wish the Inspiron was better cos it sure is prettier.

it's the same model but this is the best one value wise as add an extra 8gb ram stick for 60 euro or so and you have a good video

    the 8300h is a good chip still - 4-core

the gpu 1060 is more powerful than the 1050ti (by over 50%) and important for video editing.

I wonder how essential the 1060 is. Better no doubt than the mx150 but I used to edit on my computer in work and I'm not even sure it had a dedicated graphics card.
You see, you'll laugh, but I couldn't buy one of those gaming laptops - they're just hideous and I have to look at this thing all day.
I'm kinda hoping that inspiron niska posted would manage. As I said, the editing would be a side use and never above 1080p.

XPS 15 is the way to go for me, missed out on it last month on sale for €1599 but t=it'll go down to that again as it seems to frequently enough

Inspiron would do 1080p I suppose yes. Depends what editing features are being used.

Get it if you like the look of it.

Want to explain that one for me? Worse than the laptop I linked, clearly, and nearly double the price?

    What????

Not sure how that's worse? Great display, phenomenal power for video and widely recognised as one of the best laptops for video editing. (Also as mentioned the price comes down regularly!)

Worse colour range, which when editing video is one of the primary concerns when grading. Also more than likely with footage like drone footage which primarily is 4k with the Mavic's etc, display is super important.

As someone who edits all day, I've only recently discovered the importance of display differences when moving projects from my workstation to a laptop. Restrictive range totally changes the look of a project and can really mess up continuity in editing and exports

They are both 1080p IPS Anti Glare displays..... Your asking them to spend 849 euro more on a laptop with worse storage, GPU and ram for a tiny increase in color range? You could literally go buy one of the best 4k Monitors for less than the increase in price and just connect it to the laptop when you want that increase in colour range.

I work as a graphic designer in a large printers, trust me, you would have to be insane to chose a slightly better colour ranger over GPU, Storage and Ram improvements for 849 euro more

Have you seen the infinity edge display on the xps?

Funny enough I have actually, a guy in the office uses one, there is no debating the display is great, but even he said he wished he got the laptop I did due to the performance boost and price. He said exactly what I said, he could have just bought a stupidly great monitor for the price difference and had an all round better laptop

So you'd edit video for 8 hours a day on a laptop with brightness of 224 cd/m²?

Anyway, I'm not here to argue about who's right, I'm going on having tried out both laptops while considering my purchase and no laptop has been close to getting near my experience with the XPS. You're more than entitled to your opinion and maybe you are right and I am wrong, this is the Internet and I'm not going to go back and forth about opinions on tech! :-) Let's all be friends etc
