I was thinking should i follow up with the hr department today advising that i want the job and am ensuring that everything is ok with the reference details or something like that?

I wouldn't.

I would wait for them to contact me "mid to late this week".

If I heard nothing by Friday afternoon, I'd be popping them an e-mail.
