Planning buying a garmin. Currently using the forerunner 220. Main requirement for new watch in addition to the features of the 220 is the option to input mixed distance/time intervals e.g. sample session of 10 mins tempo, 2 mins recovery followed by a set of 400s, is it possible to input this in the Garmin 235 as one session?

It’s also possible on the 220 if you set it up as a workout.

Just to be 100% certain, can you input a mixed interval workout on the garmin itself or does it have to be done first on Garmin connect and then transferred to watch?

So if I want to do e.g. 3 x mile reps with recovery jog between, followed by 5 x 200s with recovery jog between, can all of this be put in on the one interval session so that basically I can press start, do complete workout & press stop at very end

You need to create the workout on Garmin connect.

It's very intuitive. I find it very handy. I wouldnt worry about that side of things when it comes to Garmin. HR monitor is a bit iffy

This! If that's your one requirement then there's no need to change your watch. I have the 220 and yesterday had a workout of 18 different pace changes.

As with the 235 you have to plug it into a PC and set up the workout on Connect...

Ok so I have input my program into the garmin connect app and I sent it to my garmin via Bluetooth and I checked workouts and it is there. One problem though, there doesn’t appear to be an option to repeat a workout once, the repeat options start at 2, 3, 4 etc, so I have to do 6 mins tempo x 2 with recovery but when I input it, iit looks like I am do the 2 x 6 mins tempo with 2 mins recovery 3 times though I only need to do it twice. Where am I going wrong?

I'm guessing that you first entered the workout and then looked to add repeats of it. You don't need to do that. Just enter the workout in the repeats section and use the 2 repeat option. In other words when you go to Workouts > '+', > 'Run' you will face a screen with Warm Up, Run and Cooldown showing. Delete all 3 by clicking the X on each one. Then select 'Add a repeat 2 times' and construct your workout beneath it. Simply continue to press add a step and drag that step back inside the repeat box until you have all the steps you need.
