Can't check in for connecting flight

Sunday myself and herself are heading to Oz for a few months to start a travel adventure.. I'm trying to check in for the connecting flight via Singapore Airlines as apparently I can do it 48 hours before hand... But whenever I go to check-in it tells me that I can't because the flight is operated by a partner airline:

"The next flight that is available for check-in is operated by our partner airline. Please proceed to the airport to check in for this flight"

Trying to check in with Aer Lingus tells me I need to go to the airport :(

I was really hoping that I could sort out seats before the flight to ensure we're next to each other. Last thing either of us want is a 12:30 flight sitting next to strangers.

Can I really not pick my seats in advance?

You could have pre-selected your seats online for a nominal fee, but it's too late to do that now that check-in has opened.

This isn't Ryanair. They'll keep you together.
