South African Airways pilot resigns over fake licence

    SAA said in a statement that, after investigating the incident, it found Mr Chandler had only a commercial pilot's licence. He later resigned.
    So it wasn't a fake licence, just a lower level than the requirement. Doesn't really make sense as he would have had the hours for the ATPL and all he had to do was get the written exams.

    It used to happen a lot with FAA licences thanks to their regulation that states whoever holds the controls is the Pilot in Command, so people then leave the states and say that they are a Captain without ever having sat in the left seat of "that" aircraft.

    There was/is a certain ongoing case at the moment in UK where a lad actually got on a left seat of a 737.. technically he had an ATPL issued but, allegedly he never received a captains upgrade course at any company or a 737 left seat training. Somehow by switching companies and the previous going bust, he managed to get his hands on the paper work that implies everything is in good order, however his line training flights have left company training department puzzled, to say the least

    He was fully licenced to fly right seat, which he was. He just was ineligible to become a Captain (which he wasn't).

    He had to resign because SAA required an ATPL as a company policy to fly right seat, it wasn't a legal requirement.

    So not scary or dangerous at all, just dishonest (and monumentally stupid considering how little effort would have been required to get the ATPL compared to what he already had).
